We travel to several locations locally every school year to perform.

The award-winning students of Nette Shultz Elementary School (formerly Woodrow Wilson) dance a variety of mostly Mexican dances & learning about different Latin cultures and traditions. Students of Nette Shultz Elementary School are available to perform in Denton and surrounding areas with the approval of the district.

💃 Folklórico dance is a living archive of Mexican regional identity, with each state and region of Mexico contributing its own distinct style, costume, and rhythm — from the elegant, sweeping skirts of Veracruz to the sharp, percussive footwork of Jalisco.

The full skirts worn in many folklórico styles aren't just beautiful, they're technical instruments in their own right, requiring years of practice to control and manipulate into the sweeping, dramatic shapes that define performances, often mimicking flowing water or blooming flowers depending on the regional style being performed.

Mexican American communities have kept folklórico alive and thriving across generations, with dance schools and community groups across the United States teaching children choreography that connects them directly to specific regions of Mexico their families may have left generations ago, preserving a physical, embodied connection to heritage that goes beyond language or food.

Every performance is simultaneously entertainment, education, and quiet cultural preservation happening in real time.

Did you or anyone in your family ever perform folklórico, and do you remember which regional style?

Thank you to one of my amazing Moms, Drommie Yancey, who organized this wonderful celebration at one of our local parks to celebrate our 22nd season! I will miss this special group of talented 5th graders! 🥹They are a very special group, as they were our first winners when we attended the North Texas Ballet Folklórico competition for the first time in 2025 (when they were 4th graders)! They earned Best Large Group Ensemble for the elementary school level! 🫶🏼❤️

Our final performance for the 2025-2026 school year was at Ryan High School. The 3rd-5th graders performed as well as the other folklórico in the Ryan zone! It was a great way to end the dancing season!

Out of order but in late April, some of the dancers performed at the Denton Council of PTAs Denton Dash!

After the dancers performed at the TWU Mariachi & Folklórico Festival (posted on April 11th), we had a BIG change. The city did not have a Denton 5 de Mayo celebration (a long standing tradition), but the students were invited to participate, along with other Denton schools, at the 5 de Mayo celebration at El Zócalo Food Truck park off the Denton Square! All grades were able to participate! It was a great day!

Busy end of year! After our competition, dancers were invited to a few events. I have to start off by saying that I am so proud of my dancers! Rehearsal came to a screeching halt when I suffered a fractured leg! Thankful for my Co-Director, Mr. Colón and parents who stepped up to make sure our group continued to participate in community events! First up, at the end of March, the dancers participated Multicultural Night at McNair Elementary (the day before my accident)!

Our dancers have been busy! Last weekend some of our 3rd-5th graders participated in the TWU Mariachi & Folklórico Festival! It’s a great opportunity to participate along with other Folklórico groups and high school & collegiate mariachi! Our K-2nd graders performed at our school’s Fine Arts Night this past Thursday! Some of our 5th graders also lead a workshop, teaching a piece of one of their dances! Super proud! Thankful to Mr. Colón, Mrs. Galindo, parent volunteers & 5th grade girls for stepping in while I am out with my injury! Couldn’t ask for a better team! 💚💙 Mustang pride!
