An observant student in Ms. Heidi’s class saw our first monarch of the season. After quietly observing from afar, we inspected the milkweed after she flew away- there were two eggs! They have been tagged as 9/23a and 9/23b. The eggs will hatch 4 days after being laid. The first instars will be about 2-3mm long and will eat their shells. Unfortunately, that has these two hatching on Sunday.

🐾 Our Animal Advocacy group has been busy!

Our students collected pet food, treats, and much-needed supplies for All American Dog Shelter. Every bag of food helps fill bowls, every treat brings a little joy, and every towel brings comfort! These donated supplied help the shelter stretch its resources so they can continue caring for dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes. ❤️🐶

We’re so proud of our students for seeing a need in our community and doing something about it. That’s Animal Advocacy in action! It’s something so simple that we can all do!🐾❤️

♻️🌎 Sustainability has been part of Koan from the very beginning!

Our Sustainability Crew helps us continue that commitment by making sure we recycle everything we can. Students collect and sort our recyclables each week and then make sure they get to the Denton Recycling Center instead of ending up in the trash and landfill.

It’s a simple idea with an important lesson behind it: taking care of our community and our planet happens through the little choices we make every day. 💚

We love seeing our students take ownership of those choices and understand that even small actions can make a difference.

There’s something special about our Horsemanship Crew. ❤️🐴

Our students aren’t just learning how to work with horses — they’re building relationships based on patience, trust, respect, and kindness. And the best part? Our animals know it.

They recognize their people. They relax around them, seek them out, and genuinely seem to enjoy this time just as much as our students do. There’s nothing quite like watching that trust that has built over the last couple of years.

We’re so proud of these students and the gentle, thoughtful way they show up for our animals every day. These are the kinds of connections that make this class about so much more than horsemanship. ❤️

When it’s way too hot outside to actually play with the animals… we find other ways to entertain ourselves.

Today’s activity: catching them in their most unflattering, ridiculous, and perfectly timed moments. 📸😂

Because apparently when the Texas heat says “no outside fun,” we say “fine… candid photo shoot it is.”

No animals were impressed by this activity. The humans, however, were highly entertained. 🤣❤️

Fridays are still a regular day of learning—but they give us a little extra time to slow down, dig in, and enjoy some of the amazing extra electives our students get to experience!

🐾 Animal Advocacy

There’s something pretty special about ending the week with our students cooking, creating, building, exploring nature, working with animals, and learning skills that reach far beyond a classroom.

Same school day. Same learning. Just a little extra room on Fridays for curiosity, creativity, and hands-on experiences.

And that’s one of the many reasons we love Fridays at Koan!
