What if a wearable device could help astronauts avoid shoulder injuries in space? That’s the question TWU graduate student Hunter Alvis is working to answer.

Alvis has developed a wearable device that uses small motion sensors to track an astronaut’s arm position. When the arm moves into a position that could put the shoulder at risk, the device vibrates to alert the wearer to change position. The technology is designed to address a unique challenge astronauts face: spacesuits can restrict movement and force the body into awkward positions.

The invention is now patented by Alvis, his mentor Dr. Rhett Rigby and two former TWU students. After testing the device in TWU’s motion capture lab, Alvis is preparing for another study that will simulate microgravity and have participants wear a replicated spacesuit while completing tasks similar to those performed by astronauts.

Alvis, a Texas Woman’s PhD candidate, received a 2023 fellowship from the Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSGC) that shifted his entire academic and career path. The award validated his independent research project on mitigating shoulder injuries in astronauts, renewing a life-long dream of working at NASA.

“It really instigated the change for me to really start to pursue what in the back of my head I've always kind of wanted to pursue,” Alvis said.

The increase to TWU’s second highest enrollment mark of 16,412 was paced by the university’s largest first-time-in-college (FTIC) cohort, which grew 22% over the previous year.

“These data points demonstrate Texas Woman’s is increasing access for students, ensuring they persist through college, accelerating their time to degree, and that a growing number of them are graduating with zero debt,” Chancellor Carine Feyten said.

Who's watching Lioness?

Did you know parts of Episodes 6 and 7 were filmed at the TWU Flight Center? The building was recreated to resemble a small airport in Kleberg County for the series. Check out these side by side images of the TWU Flight Center at Denton Enterprise Airport and the building's cameo in the latest episodes of this Paramount+ hit series.

The Flight Center serves as a training hub for TWU student pilots in the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences at TWU as they prepare for careers in aviation.

Fall enrollment at Texas Woman’s University jumped 5.9% to 16,412, the university’s second highest enrollment mark ever, according to preliminary figures.

Overall undergraduate enrollment grew 8.1%, while graduate enrollment across TWU’s Denton, Dallas and Houston campuses grew 1.9%.

The preliminary enrollment tally was recorded on the 12th class day, typically referred to as census day. TWU’s record enrollment of 16,441 was set in fall 2020. Earlier this year, the university also reported that half of its spring 2026 graduating class graduated debt free.

TWU's College of Nursing has received a $749,977 state grant to transform how undergraduate nursing students practice, demonstrate and ultimately master clinical skills they will need before entering the workforce.

The two-year Nursing Innovation Grant Program award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will fund a TWU Nursing project called INSPIRE-CBE.

The initiative gives students more opportunities to practice clinical skills in simulation labs with faculty and trained clinical teaching assistants before demonstrating abilities in one-on-one simulated clinical exams as part of a competency-based curriculum.

This approach shifts the emphasis from completing a set amount of clinical training to demonstrating competency. Students who do not demonstrate competency on their first attempt will receive individualized coaching and additional opportunities to practice before being reassessed.

Approximately 900 students are expected to participate in INSPIRE-CBE during the grant period. The first student-facing simulated clinical exams are expected to begin with the Junior 1 cohort in spring 2027, with the program expanding by one cohort each semester.
