🌏 Strengthening Global Connections: UNT in the Philippines 🇵🇭

What an amazing and meaningful visit to the Philippines for Dr. Kuruvilla John, who represented the University of North Texas at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Manila (PUP) in Manila—the largest university in the Philippines.

On July 30, Dr. John delivered a keynote lecture, “Multi-decadal Changes in Environmental Conditions Over Urban Areas of North Texas: An Energy and Environmental Sustainability Perspective,” at PUP’s Bulwagang Balagtas in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

But this visit was about more than sharing research. It was also about building bridges for future collaboration. 🤝

Dr. John represented UNT during a ceremony to recognize the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between UNT and PUP, creating opportunities for:
🔹 Collaborative research projects
🔹 Faculty mobility and engagement
🔹 Joint academic and research conferences
🔹 Collaborative academic programs
🔹 International academic exchange

The MOU, signed in 2025, provides a framework for turning these opportunities into meaningful partnerships that connect scholars, students, and communities across borders.

We are grateful to Dr. John for representing UNT and helping strengthen our global connections with PUP. Here’s to the exciting collaborations ahead! 🌎💚

“Moving from India to the U.S. by myself was probably the biggest life change I’ve experienced so far. Along with adjusting to college, I suddenly had to figure out “adult life” on my own, finding housing, opening a bank account, getting my driver’s license, learning transportation, and basically becoming independent overnight. It was stressful at times, but it also helped me become much more confident and adaptable.

One funny culture shock for me was realizing how early everything closes here compared to India. Back home, it feels like something is always open and people are always outside, even late at night. When I first came to Denton, I remember going out one evening thinking I’d grab food somewhere, and almost everything was already closed. I genuinely thought the town had some event going on or something because the streets were so quiet.

Recently, one thing that challenged me was balancing school, work responsibilities, and personal life at the same time. Being an international student teaches you how to manage everything independently, and sometimes that balance can be difficult, but I’ve learned a lot about discipline and time management through it.

One accomplishment I’m especially proud of is being selected as an SI Leader for BIOL 1720 at the UNT Learning Center. It felt rewarding because it showed me that my hard work and dedication were being recognized.

Outside of school, one of my favorite places in Denton is Mi Casita. I love going there with friends because the atmosphere is fun, the food is amazing, and after a stressful week, it’s one of those places that genuinely feels comforting and familiar.”

“Coming from Jamaica, it is customary to greet people by saying “Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” or “Good night” when entering a room or passing someone. When I first came to the United States, I continued doing this, but many people either looked at me strangely or did not respond at all. It was surprising because greeting others is considered a sign of respect where I am from. Over time, I learned that social norms could vary greatly across cultures.

Recently, I started a Graduate Assistant position that pushed me outside of my comfort zone. The role required me to work one-on-one with students, develop professional communication skills, and provide individualized support. While it was challenging at first, it helped me grow both personally and professionally.

One of my biggest recent accomplishments was successfully completing the first year of my two-year master’s program while balancing academics, work, and other commitments.

My favorite activities on campus are student organization events and cultural programs. They provide opportunities to meet new people, learn from different perspectives, and build a sense of community outside of the classroom.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help when you need it. Getting involved on campus can help you make friends, find support systems, and adjust more quickly to college life. For international students, remember that adjusting to a new culture takes time. Stay connected to your roots, but also be open to new experiences and opportunities for growth. Most importantly, give yourself grace as you navigate the transition.”
