🚨 COMMUNITY NOTICE | SCHEDULED PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING EXERCISE

Voorhees University will conduct a scheduled public safety training exercise on Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27, from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

During the exercise, individuals on or near campus may hear simulated sounds resembling gunshots or other loud noises. These sounds are part of the training exercise and do not indicate an active emergency.

We encourage members of the Voorhees and Denmark communities to review and share the information below with others who may be in the area.

🐯💙 VOORHEES UNIVERSITY IS HEADED TO HOMECOMING SUNDAY!

Voorhees University students and staff will join Pastor Antione Jackson and the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road for Homecoming Sunday on Sunday, August 30, at 10:00 a.m. in Columbia, South Carolina.

We invite our Voorhees alumni, families, friends, supporters, and members of the community to come worship with us and be part of this special service.

🎓 College students are encouraged to wear their favorite college or homecoming attire and represent their school with pride!

🏆 2026 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE SPOTLIGHT | JASPER FELL

For Jasper Fell, being selected for induction into the Voorhees University Athletic Hall of Fame brought a feeling of both excitement and humility.

“Voorhees University has played such an important role in shaping the person and professional I am today.”

This honor represents more than individual achievement. It reflects the support of family, teammates, coaches, mentors, and everyone who helped shape the journey along the way.

For Mr. Fell, Voorhees means family, opportunity, and purpose.

The university provided more than an education it provided a foundation for life, instilling the values of leadership, service, perseverance, and faith. Those lessons, along with the relationships built at Voorhees, continue to have a lasting impact today.

Jasper, credits the Voorhees community coaches, teammates, professors, administrators, mentors, and friends for helping shape both personal and professional growth. That sense of family and mentorship is something that still carries forward and inspires the way [he/she] pours into others today.

Looking back, the journey to this moment required discipline, sacrifice, faith, perseverance, and the support of others through both victories and setbacks.

And the message to today’s Voorhees student-athletes and the next generation of Tigers is clear:

Take advantage of every opportunity. Work hard when nobody is watching. Build genuine relationships. Learn from failure. Keep your faith strong.

Because as Jasper reminds us, “Your true legacy is the impact you leave on people and the example you set for those coming behind you.”

🏆 2026 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE SPOTLIGHT| WENDEL BROWN

When Wendel Brown, learned that he would be inducted into the Voorhees University Athletic Hall of Fame brought both shock and humility.

“I had not thought of my time playing for Voorhees Basketball as Hall of Fame status… other than working to be a winner off and on the court.”

But looking back, Brown’s Voorhees journey is filled with the moments, sacrifice and commitment that define a Hall of Fame legacy.

🏀 He remembers taking his first-ever flight as the Tigers traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the 1995 NAIA Tournament.

🏀 During a difficult stretch in another season, the team collectively shaved their heads as a symbol of unity and a fresh start — only to return to campus and discover that many male students had done the same in solidarity with the team.

🏀 And in the EIAC Championship Game against rival Benedict College, Brown scored 29 points in a double-overtime victory, earning First Team All-Tournament honors after playing in only that championship game.

Behind those moments were countless hours of work.

Brown recalls being given access to the old gym known as the “match box” where he spent late nights sharpening his game. Campus security became so accustomed to seeing him there that officers would occasionally come inside and rebound for him.

Those hours mattered.

“There was nothing I couldn’t do because of the countless nights working out.”

Today, Brown credits his teammates, coaches, trainers, staff and the Voorhees student body for helping make his journey possible.

And his message to the next generation of Tigers?

“Be a sponge of life. Don’t limit yourself to what you can do. Enjoy these days, live in the moment, and don’t be in a rush or try to skip steps.”

🎓💙 A $1 MILLION INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF VOORHEES UNIVERSITY.

Voorhees University has been selected as one of 12 UNCF member institutions to receive $1 million in permanent endowment capital through the newly established Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity.

The fund was created through a historic $12 million gift from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation to UNCF and is designed to strengthen the long-term financial sustainability of historically Black colleges and universities.

“Our country’s future and strength depend on our young people. Our system of HBCUs continue to serve as the springboard to success for thousands of students in pursuit of the American
Dream. As the children of first-generation high school and college graduates, we were imbued with a thirst for knowledge and a drive to succeed principles that we have passed on to our own children and that we wish to share with all the students at the selected HBCUs. We are honored to help UNCF strengthen the long-term financial viability of these critical schools of higher learning,” said Jamie and Judy Dimon.

For Voorhees, this investment represents more than a gift it strengthens our ability to plan for the future, expand academic opportunities, invest in our students and faculty, and continue preparing graduates for high-demand careers and lives of leadership and service.

As UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax shared, “Endowments create permanence. Permanence creates independence.”

We extend our sincere appreciation to Jamie and Judy Dimon, The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation, and UNCF for investing in the strength, sustainability and future of HBCUs.

🤝 United in purpose. Committed to community.

Denmark Technical College and Voorhees University came together for the 5th Annual Operation Olive Branch Ceremony, marking the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.

Through this shared tradition, both institutions reaffirm their commitment to creating a college experience rooted in integrity, inclusion, respect, and family.

During the ceremony, students heard from institutional leadership, including Voorhees University President Dr. Ronnie Hopkins and Denmark Technical College President Dr. Eric Brown, before taking the Unity Oath a pledge symbolizing their commitment to carrying the values of integrity, inclusion, and respect throughout their academic journey.

Here’s to a new year of connection, growth, and unity. 💙

📺🏆 Voorhees University Athletic Hall of Fame takes the spotlight on WIS 10!

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Charlene Johnson and 2026 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and former baseball player Vincent Lyde recently joined WIS TV’s Soda City Living to talk about the upcoming Hall of Fame celebration, the growing legacy of Voorhees Athletics, and the impact the event continues to have on today’s scholar-athletes.

Vincent summed up his journey perfectly: “We played for the love of the game, and now the game appears to be giving back.”
