I wanted to thank my wonderful staff at the Nature Center and all of our amazing volunteers this summer! I wouldn’t be able to do all the activities we do without all of you! We had 12 camps this summer with 403 kids in attendance! You all are the reason the kids come back every summer!

Stop #211 on America 250 Stops in 250 Days along the Iowa Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway is Yellow Smoke Park in Denison, IA.

This 360-acre recreation area features a 40-acre lake, trails, camping, a beach, boating, fishing, historic bridges, and a Lincoln Highway Interpretive Sign! The park was named for Chief Yellow Smoke of the Omaha Tribe, who inhabited that area in the mid-19th century. The Neal Moeller Environmental Education Center houses exhibits and classrooms.

Bowstring Bridge: Originally placed over Paradise Creek, this Bowstring Bridge was designed and fabricated by Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel, started by two Iowa State Graduates, W. Jackson and B. Moss. The circa 1945 bridge was moved to Yellow Smoke circa 1986 and put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

We had Knee-High Naturalists on last Tuesday night! We learned about honeybees and how important they are! We did a taste test with honey, vinegar, salt, and lemon juice to figure out where the sweet spot was on our tongue. I loved the faces when they tried the lemon juice! ❤️🐝

My milkweed brings all the monarchs to the yard, and they're like, it's better than yours 🦋

Want to attract monarchs? You'll need milkweed, since it's the only host plant for the monarch, as well as nectar plants.

You have a number of milkweed species to choose from - common, butterfly, swamp and whorled, just to name a few (of 18 in Iowa!). Monarchs lay eggs on milkweed leaves, and those eggs hatch into caterpillars, which feed on the leaves until they're large enough to go create a chrysalis and become an adult monarch.

Those adults need nectar to keep going, and native plants are strong fueling station options for your yard! Choose plants that allow you to always have something blooming, like prairie phlox in the spring to asters in the fall.
