We are heading into flu and cold season and I think it is no coincidence that this is also the time of season where school begins, life can become hectic, and holidays start to come around.
There have been many studies done over the years of the mind-body connection and its affects on dis-ease.
In Gabor Mate's book, When the Body Says NO, Gabor discusses how stress impacts the body and how chronic stress reduces the immune system's ability to do its job correctly.
"The chronic stress response, if sustained over time, suppresses immunity, and promotes the conditions that give rise to disease." Gabor Mate
"In our culture, stress is often seen as a badge of honor, a sign of productivity. Yet, chronic stress is the major predisposing factor in illness." Gabor Mate
It is no surprise that during the most stressful times of the year illness is increased.
What can you do about it?
1. Become aware.
Start being aware of your thoughts and feelings. Recognize what is triggering a stress response in your body. How does the stress response show up in your body? It can be helpful to start a thought/feelings journal. Write down the first three thoughts you wake up with in the morning, and the last three before bed. This will allow you to start seeing patterns and triggers.
2. Set healthy boundaries.
Gabor Mate, uses an example in his book of a rubberband. If you pull the rubberband slightly, you may not be able to notice the stress on the rubberband unless you have it under a microscope. If continual stress happens to the rubberband it begins to weaken in strength. Then if a big stress is put on the rubberband where it is pulled in many different directions repeatedly the rubberband breaks. People are not different. As you become aware of your thoughts and your feelings and recognize the patterns of stress, ask yourself where a boundary needs to be placed and begin implementing it. IF this is difficult for you, ask yourself, why? Do you have an expectation of yourself, others? Was an expectation placed on you about bothering, disappointing others? Do you like the perception or expectation? Is it something you'd like to change? Journal this as well.
3. Shift your perception about the stress.
"Stress is not created by the things that happen to us, but by the beliefs we hold about them." Gabor Mate. Gabor Mate suggests that belief systems, expectations, perceptions, created in the years of childhood play out throughout our life. If these belief systems about life, relationships and expectations we have of ourselves in those areas, are not supportive to the life we want to have or increase the stress response in our body, then our body will communicate in one way or another that we need to take it easy. When we shift these expectations or beliefs about these areas, our life shifts. We give ourselves permission to be independent of what is going on around us, allowing us to strengthen our immune system.
While there are a lot of diet and exercise changes you can do to experience better health, taking care of the stress that you experience in your life, mentally and emotionally, can do a lot to increase your immune system.
Biofeedback Therapy is a great way to bring your body out of stress and create a state of homeostasis down to the cells.
Biofeedback Therapy is also a good way to shift your perceptions, learn to create healthy boundaries for yourself, become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, as well as process through them in a healthy way.
