Preschool, Mommy and Me, Afterschool Programs, Parenting Support, Community Events. Home to the Sunflower Play Initiative, bringing back play to every child’s life. We believe hands-on learning experiences in Play, Nature and the Arts are absolutely essential for healthy human development. Art at Sunflower is many times a sensory experience and always process-oriented.

We place inviting, interesting materials out for the children to explore. From there, they follow their own wonderings and curiosities and choose how they would like to engage with the materials!

This leads to many organic discoveries.

What happens when I add more water?
How did that happen and can I do it again?

🌧️ Roots & Shoots G.O.! at Delray Oaks is canceled this afternoon.

Nature isn’t something we save for a special lesson.

It’s where children taste a tamarind straight from the tree, carefully catch a lizard, create recipes in the mud kitchen, climb among the mulberry branches, and swing beneath the trees.

Through these everyday experiences, children are learning about the living world, exploring cause and effect, testing their bodies, taking manageable risks, solving problems, and building confidence.

In the Sunflower Approach, nature isn’t the backdrop for learning.

Nature is the teacher. 🌿🌻

We know so many incredible educators are creating thoughtful, play-focused spaces without always having an easy way to find one another.

In classrooms, gardens, forests, studios, backyards, microschools, and community programs around the world, educators are protecting children’s time to play, explore, create, connect with nature, take meaningful risks, and learn through experience.

We want to help make these spaces—and the people creating them—more visible.

The Sunflower Approach is creating a Global Play-Focused Education Directory to help educators connect, help families discover programs that value meaningful childhood experiences, and show just how far this movement reaches.

If your school or program values play, nature, the arts, respectful relationships, and children’s individual ways of learning, we would love to learn more about you.

But what if the children imagined something else?

Creativity needs room to move beyond the example, the instructions and the “right” result. Sometimes children simply need to know that the adult in the room isn’t waiting for their work to look a certain way.

That is when “supposed to” can become “could.”

The invitation began with cups, loose parts, and light. The children brought the ideas—stacking, arranging, testing shadows, and seeing what changed as the light moved.
