Sensory play is a simple and exciting way for children to explore their different senses, movement, balance and more in an unstructured setting.
Children naturally explore textures, tastes, sounds and smell through hands-on learning, which helps to build cognitive skills. By experimenting with different materials children practice observation skills and predict and draw conclusions about the natural and physical world.

Here at Sunflower sensory invitations are part of our daily environment setup.
A few of our popular invitations are:
🔹Fake Snow (baking soda + hair conditioner)
🔸 Shaving Cream + water
🔹Corn starch +mater mix
🔸Clay +modeling tools
🔹Cloud dough ( flour + baby oil)

Seedling Alumni Service Club (Ages 13–18)

We’re excited to welcome another year of the Seedling Alumni Service Club for alumni ages 13–18 who are eager to give back to the community while earning volunteer hours. This group serves alongside their peers, building leadership, connection, and a shared sense of purpose.

Opportunities include volunteering at Sunflower events such as Ice Castle and Hop, Skip & Jump, as well as partnering with other local nonprofits to support the wider community.

The club offers approximately 10 service opportunities each year, about once a month, creating meaningful, hands-on ways for teens to stay connected to Sunflower while making a real impact.

Rough and tumble play is a normal part of healthy childhood development.

Although it can sometimes look chaotic to those watching from the sidelines, true rough and tumble play is cooperative. Children are reading one another’s cues, taking turns, testing their own abilities, and learning where the limits are, both physically and socially.

Research has linked rough and tumble play to the development of physical coordination, body awareness, self regulation, resilience, social competence, language, and confidence. It also gives children opportunities to take healthy risks, solve problems, and recover from setbacks.

Think back to your childhood.🤔
Do you remember having rough-and-tumble play experiences? Although it may look like a little battle to those passing by, rough-and-tumble play is not fighting.

Another year of Build & Play is in the books, and we recently had the chance to gather with the teachers and administrators who welcomed us into their schools throughout the year.

Each year, this appreciation gathering gives us the opportunity to come together, reflect on the year, hear firsthand stories from the classroom, and most importantly, thank the educators who opened their doors to us.

Thank you to our 2025–2026 Build & Play partners: Village Academy, Achievement Centers for Children & Families, Carver Middle School, and Guatemalan Maya Center. We are grateful for your partnership and for the opportunity to learn alongside you.

It’s easy to value what we can measure.

It’s much harder to measure persistence, creativity, empathy, flexibility, or the ability to work through frustration. Yet these are some of the capacities children draw on every day.

Free play gives children repeated opportunities to, plan and make decisions, to practice conflict resolution and build frustration tolerance.

The habits and ways of thinking children develop through play continue to influence how they approach later academics (and life) for years to come.
