Today is National Maryland Day, the 7th state to join the Union.

Maryland's coastal location brings a deeply rooted maritime heritage, including the Battle of Fort McHenry, which defended the city of Baltimore during the War of 1812. One witness to the action was so inspired that Francis Scott Key penned the words that would later become our National Anthem.
