It's that time of year again- people are thinking about their 'beach bodies' and making questionable decisions to try to meet their goals. So it feels like a good time to mention that fasting is probably not the wisest choice for most health goals (and the research shows it). I always remind my clients that the number on the scale is the LEAST helpful metrics you could use to determine progress on your health journey. One of the MOST important? Muscle mass. Whether you care about aesthetics, functioning, or longevity, muscle is your best friend. And fasting simply does not support muscle mass maintenance. Can fasting have other health benefits? Studies show it can. But is it worth the cost? Loss of muscle mass is inarguably a huge cause (yes, cause, not just correlation) of loss of functioning and increased disability as we age. That's not a risk most health professionals would advise that you take.
