Early Reader Bingo is a great way to practice sounding out words early on in the reading journey.

Here is what is on our science shelf as we learn a bit about birds. In addition to these activities, we are also reading books, having conversations, and filling our birdfeeders. Over the next couple of weeks a few more activities will be added as well.

One of my goals this year is to build our music library. I have found that children really love learning about the people behind the music. We have been fans of the Bob Marley picture books here for a number of years so I decided to lean in to him first. The biography and Yoto card donated from a family and I made the photo cards.

Enjoy this little tour of our September science shelf. The materials on this shelf typically rotate every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the interest of the children. We have just started the year, so these materials are supporting us for the first couple of weeks.

I shared a video tour the other day so here are some stills. It’s a unique classroom for sure and feels like a true Children’s House. Bluebird is a micro-school in upstate NY starting its 11 year that serves children ages 2.9-kindergarten. Each year there are tweaks, additions, and upgrades made. It’s always a work in progress.

An exciting addition this year is that our second adult, Gwen, is in Montessori training!! I have worked with incredible folks over the years but this will be the first time Bluebird has someone ready to dive deeper into the philosophy and practice.

Hello all, what a summer it has been! I’ve spent most of it teaching this incredible group of adults at Northeast Montessori Institute and camp with the bluebirds. Now I’m focusing the last few weeks on my family and home as I prepare to have BOTH of my children away at college. What?!

I hope you are all finding time to reset, reboot, and rejuvenate before heading back to the classroom. I head back to formally setup the first week in September.

When do you start your new year?

Also you may be asking, what are those people even doing?! We are making a Human Sculpture as part of our Music and Movement curriculum!

Children love riddles! This is a great way for them to practice patience, self-control, and listening skills in a group. You can find 8 different sets to use with your students in the shop!

Lemonade Stand is an annual favorite at Bluebird. This special day highlights skills that the children have built all year and get to share with their families. They mix and stir and make signs and decorate. Their faces show so much pride when they ask their adults “Would you like some lemonade?”
