Had a unique experience with ring neck pheasants today during lab. Native to Asia, these beautiful upland game birds are an American delicacy. Students enjoyed handling the birds, learning about their history, lifecycle, population trends, and anatomy.

Don't let this autumn season go too far without taking a hike outside to appreciate the natural resources our students work to conserve. Ohio's native fruit tree, the paw paw, is still producing some fruit if you can find it before the raccoons. Oliver in level 1 shared paw paw fruit with his lab so they could sample it. During lab, he also made a quick sweet paw paw bread as well.

🌲🌿 Give students choices, and watch them thrive! 🌿🌲

Over the past two weeks, our Level 1 students have been diving into the world of forestry management—and they’ve had the freedom to explore the topics that spark their curiosity! 🔥

From exciting career pathways and hands-on fieldwork to academic studies of forestry and wildlife, students have been learning by doing, exploring, and choosing their own adventure. 🦌🌳

Jada chose to focus on hickory trees 🌳. Her learning didn’t stop with research—she took it into the field, harvested hickory nuts, and then turned her harvest into homemade hickory nut cookies! 🍪🤎

This is what learning looks like when students have the opportunity to follow their interests, get hands-on, and connect classroom knowledge to real-world careers. 🚀

Choice + curiosity + hands-on learning = students thriving! 🌱✨

We all enjoy hands-on learning experiences. Try something new by building a vermicompost bin. Go home with your compost bin that you made and the red wiggler worms to do the factory work! What a great job shadowing opportunity for our students to see this program. This learning opportunity is provided by our advisory committee members from the Delaware Soil and Water Conservation District.

Barker the pig made a special visit to the wildlife lab today—and he came prepared to get his snout into some serious forestry business!

Students got a hands-on demonstration of why Forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) are so important. Livestock can have quite the impact on woodland ecosystems. Overgrazing, damaging tree bark, trampling vegetation, eroding stream banks, and contributing to poor water quality are just a few ways a hungry herd can turn a healthy forest into a muddy mess. 🌳🐖💨

Barker was more than happy to demonstrate his specialty: digging! With a few enthusiastic snoutfuls of soil, he showed students just how quickly livestock can disturb the forest floor. His digging demonstration was a great reminder that landowners need to follow their forestry management plans to protect their woods, soil, streams, and wildlife habitat while meeting their goals for the land.

But Barker wasn't finished teaching!

While he was here, he also gave students a crash course in swine care and showmanship, including bathing, brushing, belly rubs, ear notching, market hog showmanship—and, apparently, the very important skill of appreciating an exceptionally sweet pig. 🛁🧼🐽❤️

Barker may have left the lab with a little dirt on his nose, but our students left with a better understanding of forestry management, livestock care, and one very important lesson:

Sometimes the best teachers have four legs, a curly tail, and a really determined snout. 🐷🌲

"Washing water" with the level 2 lab. While learning about drinking and wastewater treatment isn't the students' favorite unit, in our environment, it is nearly one of the most important tasks to have safe drinking water for everyone. Students had to create simulated water treatment models for both drinking water and wastewater to learn the processes and experiment with various filters and measure success. Turbidity, pH, nitrates. and phosphates were tested in the water before and after the students ran the wastewater through their models. Congratulations to Rowan and Sam's groups for having the greatest success in their created water treatment models.

Enjoyed a foraging lab with the autumn equinox marking the start of a new season. Students gathered and harvested hickory nuts in our outdoor lab's forest. A delicious hickory nut cake was made from the students'work.
