Today’s hugs may have been bittersweet, but they’re also a reminder of how much love, sacrifice and support brought these new Bishops to this moment.

Parents, take a deep breath. You did it.

Momentous Beginning.

Today, Ohio Wesleyan welcomed its Class of 2030 with more than 520 new students, including 50 transfer students. Combined, the university anticipates a fall enrollment of approximately 1,675 students, OWU’s largest total enrollment since 2015 and an increase of more than 300 students (25%) since 2021.

This also marks the first time since 2012 that OWU has welcomed back-to-back incoming classes of more than 500 students. Last year’s incoming class of 568 students was the university’s largest in 17 years.

During today’s Opening Convocation, President Matt vandenBerg, Ed.D., shared the value and purpose of an Ohio Wesleyan education.

“From the very beginning, OWU has stood for a simple but powerful idea: Education should bring you freedom. The freedom to ask questions. The freedom to test ideas. The freedom to seek truth. The freedom to encounter people who see the world differently.

“At OWU, we don’t tell you what to think. We teach you how to think for yourself. You are not here simply to accept someone else’s answers. You are here to obtain the freedom to find your own.”

Ohio Wesleyan students in Professor Cliff Hurst’s Social Entrepreneurship Travel-Learning Course, spent two weeks in the Netherlands exploring businesses that are using entrepreneurship to create social and environmental good.

For Aj, the experience was about more than learning how businesses work.

"One thing this in-person experience really helped me to understand is that your product, whatever that may be, isn't for everyone, and it doesn't have to be. But once you figure out who and where your sales are coming from, then expand on that and keep your revenue coming in," he said.
