Wednesday was a busy and exciting day as our classes in grades K-3 had their first STEM Day of the year! It brought reading, science, creativity, and teamwork together across our classrooms:
Kindergarten read Where Do Animals Live? by Bobbie Kalman and designed habitats, including the ocean, Arctic tundra, forest, and wetlands.
First Grade explored “Fairy Tale Forces” through The Three Little Pigs, building houses from different materials, testing them against the “Big Bad Wolf’s” wind, and using their data to improve their designs.
Second Grade became “Matter Detectives” after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss. Students investigated dissolving, melting, reshaping, and the unique properties of Oobleck while recording their observations and thinking like scientists.
Third Grade read From Milk to Ice Cream and explored how liquids become solids by making homemade ice cream. They also combined creativity and entrepreneurship by designing and marketing their own ice cream stand businesses!

As part of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we were excited to welcome students from DeLand High School's Spanish National Honor Society to Starke!

Our VPK-2nd grade students enjoyed listening to stories read in both Spanish and English, promoting literacy while celebrating language, culture, and diversity. Thank you to these outstanding students for sharing your time, talents, and love of reading with our Koalas. We loved having you visit!

Edith I. Starke Elementary is looking for a few more community members to join us for our Great American Teach-In on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

So, what is the Great American Teach-In? It's basically a Career Day with a fancier name! 😊 Community members visit our students to share their careers, experiences, talents, and the journey that led them to where they are today.

We are especially looking for professionals in careers such as:
🐾 Animal care/veterinary fields
🔨 Skilled trades
✂️ Hair stylists/barbers
👨‍🍳 Chefs and culinary professionals
📚 Authors and writers..and many more!

Your story could inspire a student to discover a future career path, develop a new interest, or dream a little bigger.

Interested in participating? We'd love to hear from you! Please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected]

Please consider joining our school for the Great American Teach-In!
Speakers will have the opportunity to meet with students and share information about their careers, educational journeys, daily responsibilities, and the skills that have helped them succeed.
By sharing your experiences, you can help broaden students' horizons, inspire future goals, and make a meaningful impact on the next generation.
