This morning, her family announced that Dolly Parton had passed at her home in Nashville. She was 80. Her husband Carl Dean, the man she stayed married to for nearly 60 years, died in March 2025. She followed him seventeen months later.

She never had children of her own, but she leaves millions of them holding her books.

In 1995 she began mailing free books to children in the county where she was born. One book a month, from birth to age five, the child's own name on the envelope. No income forms. No catch. The idea spread county by county, then state by state, then country by country, until it became the largest program of its kind on Earth - more than 3 MILLION books mailed every month, over 300 MILLION in total.

For us here, The Early Learning Coalition of Volusia and Flagler Counties administers the program. The Flagler Imagination Library was started in June 2010 and has mailed 164,309 books to date. The Volusia County program began in February 2015 and has mailed 201,756 books to date.

Plenty of families know those envelopes without ever thinking about who started them. The book with your child's name on it, showing up in the mailbox like clockwork. That was her.

Next month, the books will continue to arrive. More than 3 million of them, all over the world. Some people leave behind songs. Dolly Parton left behind readers.

The kids called her the Book Lady. They still can. Thank you, Dolly, may you rest in peace.
