San Diego Military Academy Alumni

Just took a trip down memory lane, looking at all the photos.I remembered so much, but still the changes after 1966 when I left were many.Though I was still part of SDMA until 1969,with Capt Collins there as well as mom,who worked in the office with Mr Bitterlin.I do have a few questions.Does anybody remember Mrs Grobecker(I hope I spelled her name correctly) or Mildred in the kitchen? Sadly a former cadet is gone,Tommy Page. His mom Cherry Page also worked in the office.Tommy and I were both in Mrs Devlin's 2nd,3rd and 4th grade, also in 5th with Mrs Hamel.Tommy died Feb 9 2015.A brief bio of him is on Mustang Memories, the alumni page of San Dieguito High.Tom was 1969 senior class president.Mustang Memories don't have a FB page, but can be found through Google. They have a sad feature which on 2nd thought I don't want to see here, Alumni Obituaries.Going down the 1969 list I saw too many friends I'd known since I moved to Cardiff in 1960,I still think of them as the kids that swam in our pool, went bike riding and played in the canyon with me.I don't want to see all the cadets that are gone now that I knew.
Holy smokes guys, look at what I came across. Amazing what a person finds when you are "restricted to quarters".
Something else I remember too when I was in my senior year we got to go on Street pass on Friday evenings and that was lot of fun, that was one of the things the seniors got to do and it was fun.
I transfered to SDMA in 1975 , 7th grade. Transferred out at xmas break. Only there a half a year but still have many memories from those long ago days. Anyone recognize me?
For my friend Tom.Son of Michael and Maxine Mericantante of Solana Beach, Tom attended San Dieguito High School after having attended St. Brigid Academy and San Diego Military Academy. He enlisted in the US Army Corps of Engineers and served as a private first class in an engineering battalion in Vietnam ’s Quang Tri area. Eight months after enlistment, a fragmentation weapon took his life. He is interred in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery; he had not yet turned nineteen
Hello Everyone, Lets all do our best and preserve the history of San Diego Military Academy it was a great place for me to attend when I did and my parents encouraged me to so I could get a good education and not get into drugs etc. And I have a lot of pride in this page on Facebook and I want the history to stay well preserved so SDMA Alumni, keep up the great work you are doing and lets all preserve the history of this wonderful school of ours which I am sure did a lot of good for all who attended. God bless, Jeff Brower SDMA Alumni 1969 Graduated 1973.
Here is the agenda for June 6, 1970 Commencement Day.
All - Due to a couple of requests, I had another go at the "stripes" images so as to improve clarity for your image capture. Enjoy.
I discovered a few items from my time at SDMA which you may recognize.
Now that I have time to dig through my pile of memorabilia, look what I found!
Went there in 1975-76. Met lots of people there and wondered how they were doing.
So lets also please preserve the wonderful history SDMA has, it really did a lot for me.

San Diego Military Academy was a school for 1st through 12th grade from 1959 to 1979.

Mission: To reconnect past students, staff and friends, share memories, photos and information. Admiinstered by Terry Madory - SDMA 1976-77

Cutting edge technology at SDMA. Transistor TV sets, 8-Track tapes and big analog stereo sets! There were lava lights, black lights and LCD watches too!

Happy Easter S.D.M.A.

We hope that you are staying safe during the Covid19 pandemic. Back at SDMA you could always report to Sick Call and visiting Nurse Kathleen Wilcsek to hopefully get out of class. She fixed up a lot of black eyes, scrapes and sprained ankles too!

There were places at SDMA where you weren’t allowed to go and places were you hoped you would never have go to.

Were you one of the lucky cadets that got to pick up allowance from the “Money Lady”, Mrs. Moore, in the office on Fridays? If you did you probably ran straight to the PX snack bar for pizza and soda.

Do you remember? Annual Federal J.R.O.T.C. Inspection and review. Everything straight and spit-shined!

Those we Love don’t go away; They walk beside us in our Hearts and Memories.

Day cadets were roughly 10% of the cadet corps. They had book lockers and went home after classes. Either you were a “Day Cadet” or a “Stay Cadet”. If you were a stay cadet and far from home, you may have sometimes wished you were a day cadet and going to be home soon.

How many books did you have to haul to classes?

Did you know that the modular classrooms on the upper deck were donated from San Diego Unified School District because they were at the end of their 20 year life expectancy? SDMA used them for 20 more years, then Santa Fe Christian Academy fixed them up and got another 40 years out of them. Amazing!

Always burgers and fries on Thursday! Can you still remember the best lunch of the week?

To all the SDMA alumni and staff. Happy holidays and may the new year bring you all happiness, health, and peace.

It was about this time of year SDMA started up the Good Neighbor Christmas Program. Betty Kastner gets the volunteer cadets looking the part for the toy collection in 1975.

An extremely early photo. An awards presentation in the first couple of years of the academy’s existence. Roughly 1959-1963. Persons in the image unknown.

Do we have any members of the Class of 1965?

We are sad to announce the passing of Kelley Akin, SDMA Class of 1977, on August 11, 2019.

Always in our Hearts.
Forever in our Memory.

Did you order a class ring back in the day? Chances are very few did. They weren’t cheap. If you still have one, share a pic.

Thank you Piyapote Pisalyaput for sharing this:

For a few cadets, Thanksgiving was spent on campus. If so, you likely spent Thanksgiving with the dining hall crew. Happy Thanksgiving to all SDMA alums.

A quick question...

Question = What was the circumstances that made you attend SDMA ???

Aloha Stephen Arruda! Thank you for sharing this photo with us!

I was thinking SDMA was the first time I was exposed to "the mainland" after a peaceful upbringing in Hawai'i what an experience

[08/10/18]   We have been informed of the passing of David Jenest. He most likely attended SDMA in the 1960s or earlier. If you have any photos of David, please post them here so we can share them with his family.

Condolences to the Jenest family.
