Language night, full of culture with the flrpies!

NIU Foundation 06/04/2025

Hi FLRPies,
My name is Concepcion Gliesman, and I’m reaching out to you on behalf of the Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP)a program that has transformed lives for over 50 years by creating immersive, culturally rich experiences right here on campus.
If you’re reading this, it’s likely because FLRP once played a meaningful role in your life. You know better than anyone: FLRP is more than just a language program. It’s a community. It’s a space where students live the language they’re studying—French, Japanese, Spanish, or Tagalog—through daily interactions with native speakers, cultural events, and lifelong friendships. For students who may not have the financial means to study abroad, FLRP brings the world to them.
But today, FLRP is at risk.
Due to budget cuts and limited funding, we’re struggling to support the heart of our native speaker scholars—and to continue offering the cultural experiences that make FLRP so special.
That’s why I’m reaching out to our alumni—the FLRPies who know the value of what this program offers.
We're asking you to help pay it forward and support the next generation of global learners.
Your support will help us:
• Provide scholarships and fair compensation to our native speaker residents
• Offer more cultural excursions and events in the area
• Fund study abroad opportunities for students who otherwise could not afford them
With your help, we can:
• Enhance the FLRP experience for our growing student population
• Empower our native speakers to lead and inspire
• Inspire students to dream bigger, travel further, and connect more deeply
We know firsthand how impactful FLRP can be—because you lived it. Let’s make sure future FLRPies get the same chance to grow, connect, and thrive.
Please consider donating today. Every contribution makes a difference.

I am excited to reach out to you today to extend a heartfelt invitation to our annual FLRP Talent Night Show, proudly presented by our talented FLRPies, who are enrolled in the language courses at NIU. This event has become a cherished tradition within our community, showcasing the incredible skills and creativity of our students.

During the performance, you will have the opportunity to experience a variety of cultural dances, poetry readings, and artistic displays. Each act reflects the diverse backgrounds and talents of our students, making this an enriching experience for everyone involved. It’s a wonderful chance to celebrate their hard work and dedication while enjoying an evening of entertainment.

I truly hope you can join us and show your support for some of your sons, daughters, friends, etc. Your presence not only encourages the performers but also strengthens the sense of community that we value so deeply within FLRP. If you are unable to attend, please consider offering this event as an extra credit opportunity for your students.

FLRP Talent Night will take place on Friday, November 15th, at 5:30 PM in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium. Please mark your calendars! We anticipate a delightful evening filled with inspiring performances, and I am confident that you will leave with a smile and a sense of pride in our talented FLRPies.

Thank you for considering this invitation, and I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Hi FLRPies,
I hope you are well! I am writing to you about something that is very important to me: I’ve been the Coordinator of the Foreign Language Residence Program for seven years and counting, and each year my love for the program grows. Last year, for the first time we did the Crowdfunding to help the FLRP family and thank you to all the support of the FLRPies we were able to raise $3500.
This year is FLRP’s 51st anniversary of helping FLRPies become amazing foreign language speakers, and we are raising money to help continue our legacy! Every donation made will help support our amazing FLRPies this academic year, and make sure they are set up for success to study abroad and continue to learn from their Native Speakers.
For the next 30 days, The Foreign Language Residence Program is raising $4,500 or more to support these efforts. Part of my job is to help raise money to hit our goal, and I am reaching out to those people who have supported me along the way to help support me now as well. Would you please make a donation to support this project? A gift of any amount will be a big help.
Thank you for your support! https://crowdfund.niu.edu/FLRPies2023

This Saturday, September 24th we celebrated FLRP’s 50th. Thank you for all of the FLRPIES that came to our beautiful celebration. As a host I was so busy that I didn’t even take one picture of the venue or guest. However, I know that a lot of you did take lots of pictures and I’m hoping you can share them with me here or send them to me at [email protected] thank you!
