SEA Club is funded by the Student Association and sponsored by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Northern Illinois University.

Established in 1969, SEA Club has become instrumental in providing various outlets for students and other members of the community to learn about Southeast Asia. We host annual culture nights that involve performances from the various Southeast Asian countries and an annual student conference that brings in a guest speaker to lecture on Southeast Asia. We plan to assist with CSEAS outreach coordin

Southeast Asian Language Tables

In an effort to keep the tradition of language tables going at NIU during this time of little in-person contact, the Southeast Asia Club--with support from CSEAS, Burma Interest Group, and former Fulbright teaching assistants in Southeast Asia (SEA)--has been working to organize not only virtual language tables, but international virtual language tables during International Education Week 2020! NIU students will be joining colleagues in Southeast Asia for language practice, cultural exchange, and much needed hanging out each morning from November 16-19, with an English language table on November 20.

We would like for participants to register for the SEA Language Tables. A zoom link will be sent out to registered attendees.

NIU 2020 Southeast Asia Student Conference Welcome 04/21/2020

Northern Illinois University 2020 Virtual Southeast Asian Studies Student Conference:

As universities across the globe were making many hard decisions these past few weeks, the NIU Southeast Asia Club (SEA Club) and Center for Southeast Asian Studies also canceled our face-to-face annual student conference. While we regretted having to do so, we knew that it was absolutely necessary, and we embraced the opportunity to try something new. A team of graduate students jumped up, dove in, and saved the conference, bringing the whole thing online, allowing students from nine universities to give their papers and add NIU's annual conference to their CVs. Along the way, we all learned new things; for many of us, this was the first opportunity to participate in an online conference. So without further ado,

We welcome you to the NIU 2020 Virtual Southeast Asian Studies Student Conference!

Our conference is online, but not live, allowing viewers to watch presentations in any order and revisit them at their leisure. Please follow the YouTube link below. Our student presenters are excited to receive questions and welcome your notes in the comment space below their videos. Furthermore, most presenters have given permission to include their emails in the program, anticipating follow-up questions.
