NIU STEAM NIU STEAM is made up of programs and people committed to providing activities that spark curiosity, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

NIU STEAM Works is the umbrella name for programming out of NIU's Center for P-20 Engagement. Our popular programs include SmartSpace@NIU, STEM Cafes, STEM Divas, STEM Outreach, and STEM Read. All of our programs combine the best of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to provide a unique educational experience for audiences across the entire learning continuum.

Free NIU STEAM Café explores the art and science of live special effects at Fatty's Pub and Grille in DeKalb, IL.

Professor Nunnally will discuss how engineering and math help to keep people safe while making them feel as if they’ve been part of death-defying feats. He’ll delve into the fascinating details of special effects planning and safety analysis as he walks the audience through the process of moving live theatrical effects from idea to reality.

We've moved our exhibitors inside the Holmes Student Center, Founders Memorial Library, and Swen Parson Hall.

STEM Fest Parking Information
Parking for STEM Fest is free for all attendees, with limited spaces in the Visitor Lot and overflow in the NIU Parking Structure.

The Visitor Parking Lot is located off Carroll Avenue and is first-come, first-served.
The Parking Deck is located at 121 Normal Road, DeKalb, IL. and is also available.

While there is no cost for parking, please be aware of any restricted area and reserved parking signs.

NIU's Innovation Challenge is kicking off for the 26-27 school year!

If you looking for a way to incorporate a team-based challenge into your high school curriculum, club, or activity for the 26-27 school year, NIU has you covered! We host a free competition that follows the ISBE format for team-based challenges in the career clusters centered around Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, as well as Health Sciences and Technology. As your students develop an innovative solution to one of our authentic problem scenarios, registered teams gain access to University and Industry mentors to support their learning.

The topic of the lab is drones and the technology behind them. There will be interactive activities along with demonstrations from experts Nick Haws (drone soccer coach at Dixon Public Schools) and Stratton Ford (drone videographer at Indoor Drone Tours).

The Haunted Physics Lab is an original NIU event that grows with every annual STEM Fest celebration. Many of the Haunted Lab exhibits have been created and built by NIU's own staff and are designed to demonstrate physics phenomena that appear to be spooky and mysterious. Check out the Haunted Physics Lab for yourself this September 19 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Ellington's in the Holmes Student Center!
