Hench Autism Studies Program, Defiance College Join the conversation. Promote understanding. Change lives.

The Hench Autism Studies Program at Defiance College serves as a focal point for teaching, scholarship and action to serve individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families. The Hench Autism Studies Program believes that people with autism spectrum disorder are as unique, individual, and fully human as anyone else, and that living and working with people on the spectrum is about more than just learning a new vocabulary or having a diagnostic label to explain a person. Bringing together expertise and services in an innovative way, the Hench Autism Studies Program offers:

*An on-campus public school classroom for adolescents with ASD (a collaboration with Defiance City Schools)
*An undergraduate minor in autism studies
*Professional development opportunities for educators, social workers, law enforcement, medical personnel, and other interested parties
*A resource center in the Pilgrim Library for DC students, professionals, community members, and families

The Hench Autism Studies Program understands that for all the challenges autism spectrum disorder presents to individuals, families, educators, and communities, there are also joys and journeys that a textbook language cannot fully capture.

We have 7 seats open! Register today! Join us for a sensory-friendly viewing of the upcoming release 'Forgotten Island'. Sponsored by the Hench Autism Studies Program and hosted by Phoenix Theaters, this fun event is for youth ages 8-18 diagnosed with autism or other neurodivergent conditions, and their parent or responsible adult.

With reduced volume and the lights dimmed to medium instead of low, this is sure to be an enjoyable experience for all! Parents and youth will have free admission, along with a 32-oz popcorn and a 16- oz drink for each person.

Time: 6:00pm
Where: Phoenix Theatres, Defiance, Ohio

A Summer Kickoff Family Event! Sponsored by the Hench Autism Studies Program with entertainment provided by Glovation Circus, this free family event is for youth ages 8-18 who are diagnosed with autism or other neurodivergent conditions, and their family members. Join us on the Defiance College campus at Hubbard Hall for a patio party with games, face painting, balloon artists, a hula hoop artist, along with pizza and other refreshments.
