Did you know that questions and doubts are a healthy part of a developing faith? God is secure enough that he can handle all of questions, doubts, and wonderings. Let's model that for kids as we welcome them into our churches.

When children, do not have safe and understanding Christian adults to share their questions, doubts, and wonderings, that is when they can become problems to faith development.

How do create a safe environment to question and wonder?

We love you and are in awe of the way you glorify God and love children and their families!Thank you!

My (Joy) children's school district is backing away from screentime. I appreciate the intentionality and willingness to humbly rethink their approach to tech. Is it time for your church/ministry to re-evaluate as well?

Last summer, we posted this piece on our blog. Technology has its place, but it can't replace the relationships that make a church or nurture children's faith. Steward it well!

Does the idea of spiritual practices seem too big or developmentally inappropriate for children? Or, maybe too intimidating for you or too contemplative for your church? They don't have to be! I love this definition of spiritual disciplines or spiritual practices from Adele Ahlberg Calhoun about space to "keep company with Jesus." Sounds inviting to me!

What are some of your favorite ways to invite children to keep company with Jesus?

We know you want to love your children and families well, so here are a few prayerful and intentional ideas to help you pause and pray during this busy time of back to school prep.

What are some ways you bring intention into this time of year?

Hi, we’re the Center for Faith and Children at Taylor University.
We help children's ministry leaders, pastors, and Christian parents reimagine church as a place where a child's faith flourishes. Most of our work focuses on helping church leaders and parents understand how children's faith is formed and bridging theory with practice.
If you’re new here, tell us what kind of ministry role you’re in.

When I (Joy) first started working with children in the church, I assumed they wanted to be entertained, polished stories, and over the top energy. Over time, I realized they were actually looking for relationships with safe adults who help them know they belong, belief in their ability to have a real faith, and encounters with God. That's why I approach nurturing children's faith differently today. If you're trying to help children's faith flourish, this shift might help more than you think.

What beliefs about what children want and need at church have you shifted from or to?

It's easy to jump straight to planning, organizing, and problem-solving, but taking a minute to pray can completely change the outcome. Small habits like this might not seem exciting or important, but they're often what make the biggest difference over time. Try it the next time you're about to plan an event or call a volunteer and see what happens. Because God cares about all of it, big or little.
