Major General William P. Levine's Circle garden
This morning as I walked out the main entrance of Moriah, the beauty of Major General Levine's garden (in the center of the circle drive), strung with Israeli flags and the Counting of the Omer mitzvah bags, struck me deeply in my soul.
It occurred to me that many of you do not know who the garden is named for. General Levine was a founding member of Moriah and many other synagogues in the area. What is unique about his story is that he was a Major General in the US Army. He was one of the American soldiers who liberated the concentration camp Dachau, an experience that shaped his life. He was committed to the continuation of Jewish peoplehood and Judaism. The vision of the flags and the words and voices of young children inside of the Omer h**p bags, boldly affirms the continuation of Jewish children and peoplehood. It brings so much joy and meaning to the place where we welcome the families each day, and where we safely celebrate as a kehillah, during the pandemic.
Shabbat Shalom!
