This post is making the rounds on social media and deserves to be shared on our page as an invitation to our families at Evergreen Academy and our surrounding neighborhoods.

If your kids are loud, please still come to church.

If you’re running late because getting everyone out the door was a battle, please still come to church.

If your toddler won’t sit still, please still come to church.

If your baby needs to eat, please still come to church.

If your child asks questions at the least convenient time, please still come to church.

If someone cries, drops a toy, needs a snack, or has to make their third trip to the bathroom, please still come to church.

If your child doesn’t know all the words, all the prayers, or exactly when to sit and stand, please still come to church.

If you feel like you spent the entire service managing your children and heard approximately 12% of the sermon, please still come to church.

If Sunday morning feels messy instead of peaceful, please still come to church.

If you’re worried your children are distracting the people around you, please still come to church.

Because children do not learn how to be part of the Church by staying home until they can sit quietly.

They learn by being here.

They learn the hymns by hearing us sing them.

They learn the prayers by hearing us pray them.

They learn to worship by watching us worship.

They learn that church is home because we make room for them here.

The wiggles, whispers, dropped crayons, crying babies, and little voices are not interruptions to the life of the Church.

They are evidence that the Church is alive.

So bring the babies. Bring the toddlers. Bring the big kids. Come late. Sit in the back. Sit in the front. Step out when you need to and come right back in.

Just come.

Children are not simply the future of the Church. They are part of the Church right now. And there is a place for every family here at Zion.

Beginning this month, our children at Evergreen Academy will have a special opportunity to make a difference for children their own age across the United States.

Continuing until Thanksgiving, our weekly chapel offerings will support ELCA Good Gifts and its work to provide food for children who rely on school meals during the week but may not have enough food to eat on the weekends. Nearly 30 million students receive lunch through the National School Lunch Program each school day, and the School Nutrition Association reports that nearly 1 in 5 children in the United States lives in a household without consistent access to adequate food.

Our national church is one of many organizations that supports “backpack” programs, providing children with nutritious food to take home for the weekend. The goal is that, when the school cafeteria closes for the weekend, a child should still have food to eat.

Through your child’s chapel offerings, $10 can help provide a backpack of food for a child facing food insecurity in the United States. We invite our preschoolers to bring their chapel offerings each week as we work together toward the goal of supporting as many backpacks as possible. One child may bring $1. Another child may bring $5. Perhaps a family will decide to contribute $10 or more. Every gift matters. Together, their small offerings can become something much bigger over the next few months.

We will track the number of backpacks their offerings support through a chart in the Preschool Office. This helps us to teach an important lesson about generosity. We give because we have been blessed, and we share because other people are our neighbors. We may never meet the children who receive these meals, but we can still care for them. Through this project, our children are learning that, even at a very young age, they can be part of God's work in the world.

This Labor Day, we give thanks for the work of hands, hearts, and minds that strengthens our community.

We give thanks for those whose labor often goes unnoticed—for caregivers and teachers, first responders and service workers, nonprofit staff and volunteers, construction workers and office workers, and everyone who shows up each day to make a difference.

In that spirit, Zion and all of our ministries are closed today. Happy Labor Day!
