Lauren Hecker Visits Her Famous Ancestor’s Hometown
One of our German students, Lauren Hecker, recently went to Germany to the birthplace of her direct ancestor, Friedrich Hecker. Here’s the background, along with a link to the video, in Lauren’s own words:
Angelbachtal, Germany holds particular significance for my family. It is the birthplace of my great-great-great grandfather, Friedrich Hecker, a lawyer and politician who was a leading figure in the 1848 democratic revolution in Germany. He advocated for civil rights, freedom of the press, and a unified republic. Although the uprising he led in 1848 was ultimately unsuccessful, his legacy remains strong in the Kraichgau region.
After emigrating to the United States, Hecker settled in southern Illinois, where he served as a Union Army officer during the Civil War and later became a gentleman farmer. Today, there are statues and memorials honoring him in both Germany and the United States, including one locally in Over the Rhine's Washington Park. In 1998 and 2023, during the 150th and 175th anniversaries of the 1848 Revolution, Hecker family members traveled from America to Angelbachtal to participate in commemorative events and visit his birthplace.
As of May 2026, Angelbachtal was renamed to Angelbachtal Heckergemeinde (community), reflecting the continued importance of Friedrich's legacy.
Earlier this year, I was formally invited by the Mayor of Angelbachtal, Frank Werner, to participate in an (unpaid) internship with the Angelbachtal City Council in May. This was a unique and exciting opportunity for me to live and work in the village, in preparation for two major community events: the Wine and Gin Walk and Pfingstmarkt (Pentecost Market).
This immersive opportunity allowed me to contribute meaningfully to community engagement efforts while deepening my understanding of German language, culture, and local government operations. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I made so many connections, friendships and memories and I’m thankful for the role Solveig and ILP played in my German language studies.
