The kids harvested fresh ingredients from their garden today and made a batch of delicious, healthy, mild salsa! It's super fresh, packed with flavor, and totally kid-friendly (no heat). YUM! Good job kids! I know what I am having for lunch!

Today, I remembered why I started doing daycare in the first place—not just to watch over children, but to catch them when their worlds shatter.

Two siblings in my care, an older boy and a younger girl with different fathers, had been sparring the way young siblings do, letting anger get the better of them. But then, the little girl said something cruel, a weapon dipped in a grief too heavy for either of them to carry: "You don't have a dad. Your dad is dead."

The boy’s face crumpled. He burst into tears and bolted into the other room, swallowed by a heartbreak no child should ever know.

I followed him into the quiet, kneeling beside him as his small shoulders shook.

"It's OK," I whispered, pulling him close. "You still have a great dad. He is looking after you. He sees you all the time. You might not be able to see him, but he sees you. You know that little voice in your head that tells you something is wrong? That's your dad. You have a guardian angel."

Instantly, the darkness lifted from his face. His eyes widened, and a brilliant, wondrous smile broke through his tears.

"I DO!?" he gasped, wonder washing over him. "WOW! I have a guardian angel! That is so cool!"

In that single, fragile moment, the unbearable weight of a lost father transformed into a comforting presence, wrapping around him like a shield. I felt like I truly made a difference in a child's life today—and it was everything.
