“The hardest part of being a transition teacher is knowing that eventually the students you have spent years preparing will no longer need you. The best part is knowing they are ready.”

As the school year comes to an end, I find myself thinking about the students who are moving on from our program. Transition teachers have a unique role. We spend years helping students develop independence, confidence, self-advocacy skills, employment skills, and the ability to navigate adult life. We celebrate their successes, support them through challenges, and encourage them to keep growing. Then eventually, the day comes when they no longer need us in the same way they once did. That can be one of the hardest parts of the job. It can also be one of the most rewarding. Because the goal was never to keep students dependent on our support. The goal was to help them become confident, capable, and ready for whatever comes next. Today's quote reminds us that one of the greatest rewards in education is watching students move forward knowing they are prepared for the future.

“Independence is knowing you can manage your life even when no one is watching, reminding, or rescuing you.”

One of the biggest shifts from school to adulthood is moving from external support to internal responsibility.

In school, students often have:
• reminders
• prompts
• schedules
• check-ins
• support systems

Adult life expects something different.

It expects people to manage responsibilities, solve problems, advocate for themselves, and continue moving forward even when no one is directing them.

That is why transition planning is about so much more than graduation.

The goal is not simply to help students succeed when support is available.

The goal is to help students develop the confidence and skills to succeed when support is no longer immediately present.

That is independence.

It is easy to think that the most important moments of the year have already happened. But often, some of the most meaningful learning takes place during the final days of school. A conversation that encourages a student to believe in themselves. A lesson that helps a skill finally click. An experience that builds confidence, independence, or a new perspective. As the school year comes to a close, students, families, and educators often focus on the finish line. We celebrate completed assignments, report cards, graduations, and the arrival of summer. But the final week of school is also an opportunity to pause and reflect on how much growth has taken place throughout the year. Growth is not always measured by grades or test scores. Sometimes it is found in a student's increased confidence, improved communication skills, greater independence, stronger friendships, or willingness to try something new. Sometimes people think independence means removing support as quickly as possible. In reality, independence is usually built through support, guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to practice skills over time. Students develop confidence when they know someone believes in them while also giving them opportunities to take risks, make decisions, solve problems, and learn from experience. Parents, educators, mentors, and support professionals all play an important role in this process. The goal is not to do everything for students, nor is it to leave them to figure everything out alone. The goal is to walk beside them, providing support when needed while gradually helping them build the skills and confidence required to move forward independently. Today's quote reminds us that independence is not created through isolation. It is created through guidance, practice, trust, and growth.

“The Independence Gap is the space between graduating from school and functioning successfully in adult life.”

This idea became one of the driving forces behind my upcoming book, What Happens at Twenty-Two? What Families Need to Know Before Special Education Ends.

For many students, graduation is celebrated as the finish line. Families spend years working toward that important milestone, and rightfully so. But graduation itself does not automatically prepare someone for adulthood. There is often a gap between earning a diploma and successfully navigating the responsibilities of adult life. That gap may include managing money, maintaining employment, advocating for support, navigating transportation, building relationships, accessing community resources, or simply handling everyday responsibilities independently.

I call this the Independence Gap.

It is one of the biggest challenges facing students and families as they transition into adulthood. The goal of transition planning should not simply be helping students graduate. It should be helping students build the skills, confidence, and support needed to function successfully after graduation.

Because life after school is the real test.

As the school year winds down, it is common for students to feel less motivated. Summer is approaching, routines are changing, and many students are already thinking about what comes next. While this feeling is understandable, the final days of the school year offer an important lesson that extends far beyond the classroom. Adult life is filled with responsibilities that do not always feel exciting and often do not come with immediate rewards. Independence requires the ability to stay committed, follow through, and complete responsibilities even when motivation is low. Learning how to finish what you start is one of the most valuable skills students can develop as they prepare for adulthood. Today's quote reminds us that independence is not built only during moments of excitement and motivation. It is often built during the moments when we choose to keep going anyway.

That may sound harsh, but here’s the reality:

Too many transition programs focus on compliance, paperwork, and checking boxes instead of teaching the skills students actually need for adulthood.

Graduation is not the finish line.

Independence is.

“The goal of independence is not just managing responsibilities. It is also knowing how to enjoy life.”

As we approach the final days of the school year, it is important to remember that independence is about more than completing responsibilities and managing daily tasks. While learning to budget, cook, do laundry, manage schedules, and maintain employment are all important life skills, a meaningful adult life also includes recreation, relationships, hobbies, relaxation, and community involvement. Too often, we think of recreation as something separate from transition planning when it is actually an important part of it. Recreation helps individuals reduce stress, build friendships, discover interests, participate in their communities, and improve overall quality of life. The goal of independence is not simply learning how to manage life. It is learning how to enjoy it as well. Today's quote reminds us that a successful transition to adulthood should include both responsibility and opportunities for joy, connection, and fulfillment.
