These leaders in ministry make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Every community needs capable, compassionate Christian leaders who serve the common good, strive for justice, build up the community, share the Gospel and ultimately do the church’s work in the world.

Early doctoral study often comes with big questions, deep hopes, and real challenges.

This reflection highlights multiple perspectives on that journey and why spaces like the Forum matter. While the path toward teaching and theological leadership is meaningful, it can also feel lonely at times. Community reminds us that we do not have to discern our vocation or prepare for this work alone.

The Forum for Theological Educators brings underrepresented and underserved doctoral students together for networking, mentorship, professional development and vocational exploration. It is a space to build relationships with peers and mentors who understand the questions, hopes and challenges of pursuing a call to teach.

What is the “Sound of the Genuine”?

Howard Thurman described it as the Spirit/God within us that helps us recognize what is true and meaningful in our lives. It can be difficult to hear it beneath the noise of expectations, fear, ambition and other people’s definitions of who we should be.

Discernment begins when we make space to listen. As we pay attention to what is stirring within, trusted community can help us recognize the gifts, questions and convictions we may not yet be able to name for ourselves.

Meet Jorge Rodriguez, former FTE Doctoral Fellow!

Jorge earned his Ph.D. in Modern Religious History from Union Theological Seminary, where he was part of the Hispanic Theological Initiative and held an FTE Doctoral Fellowship supporting underrepresented and underserved students. He's since gone on to earn an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Harvard University. He recently stepped into a new role as Executive Director of the Hispanic Scholars Program, marking an exciting next chapter of faithful leadership.

FTE is proud to have been a part of Jorge's journey.
