Celebrating 65 Years today!
Today, October 1, 2026, Hillside Bethel Ministries marks 65 years of ministry.
Before we gather to celebrate on Sunday, I want to pause today and give this anniversary the honor it deserves.
On October 1, 1961, my dad, Donald E. Horath, began the ministry that would become Hillside. With my mom, Vickie D. Horath, beside him, they gave their lives to serving God and the people He entrusted to their care. Dad pastored here for 60 years. Momās faithfulness is woven into the life of this ministry, too. She served faithfully beside Dad and has bravely continued on since his passing.
Today, we honor them both with grateful hearts.
As their son, this history is deeply personal. As Hillsideās pastor, I feel the responsibility of carrying it forward. And as someone who calls Decatur home, I recognize what 65 years of faithful ministry means to a community.
We are not large, flashy, or trendy. Yet, I can't help but think of all the lives held within those years - and the years to come.
Children who first heard about Jesus hereāand grew up to bring their own children. Students taught and encouraged through our school. Young people discovering that their lives have purpose. Couples making promises at the altar. Families gathering to say goodbye to someone they love. People finding prayer, friendship, help, and a place to belong when they needed it most. People staying and working faithfully, side by side.
Some of those stories we know. Others belong quietly to the people who lived them and to the God who met them there.
Sixty-five years of ministry deserves a moment of reverence.
But this is more than the legacy of one man or one family. We honor all the people who helped build Hillside, those who carried its work through difficult seasons, and those serving today. We honor those who continue to stand with us: pastors, teachers, staff, volunteers, families, and faithful saints whose names may never appear on a plaque, but whose service has shapedāand continues to shapeāthis ministry.
Every generation has received something precious from the one before it. Every generation has had a part to play. Every generation joins together at the cross.
āThis is the generation of those who seek Him.ā ā Psalm 24:6
For 65 years, Hillside has been part of Decaturās story. Through worship, Christian education, care for families, and service to our neighbors, this ministry has helped shape lives that reach far beyond our doors. That is something for our churchāand our communityāto honor.
Today, we give thanks to God for sustaining this work through changing times, hard seasons, and joyful milestones. We remember the people whose faithfulness brought us here. And we renew our commitment to care well for what has been entrusted to us.
āThus far the LORD has helped us.ā ā 1 Samuel 7:12
That is our testimony today.
Thank You, Lord, for 65 years. Help us serve You faithfully in the years still to come.
With gratitude and love,
Pastor Kevin
