Important Parking Lot & Bus Drop-Off Update

Due to continued road construction on Phelps Street, the horseshoe parking lot in front of Davis Elementary School will be closed to traffic through September 4. During this time, bus drop-off and pick-up will take place in the upper parking lot of the Jr./Sr. High School. Traffic cones will be placed around the perimeter of the lot to provide a designated area for buses. Staff and guests may continue to park in the upper parking lot, provided they use the interior parking spaces and do not park in the designated bus area. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through this construction. If you have any questions, please contact us at 423-6800. Thank you for your understanding.

Decatur Public Schools Staff Strengthen Safety Through CPR and First Aid Training
August 25, 2026

At Decatur Public Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always a top priority. On August 25, our staff took another important step toward maintaining a safe and prepared school community by participating in CPR and First Aid training.

The training provided staff with valuable knowledge and hands-on skills to respond confidently in an emergency. Whether responding to a medical situation, providing first aid, or performing CPR, having trained staff members on-site helps ensure that our schools are prepared to act quickly when every second matters.

Being a safe school is about more than having policies and procedures in place—it is about preparing our people to respond when it counts. This training strengthens our ability to protect our students, support one another, and provide a safe learning environment each day.

We are proud of our Decatur Public Schools staff for taking this responsibility seriously and continuing to build their skills. Their commitment to preparedness demonstrates the care they have for our students and the entire school community.

A special thank-you goes to Bob Kirk and Mike Martinak of the Van Buren Intermediate School District (VBISD) for providing the CPR and First Aid training and helping equip our staff with these important lifesaving skills.

At Decatur Public Schools, safety is a shared responsibility—and today’s training is another great example of our staff working together to keep our schools safe, prepared, and ready for whatever comes our way.

Firearm Secure Storage Notice

To help protect Michigan’s youth and prevent unintentional firearm-related injuries, Michigan law requires firearm owners to securely store fi****ms whenever minors are present or reasonably likely to be present. Under Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) 28.429, Section 9 of 1927 PA 372, firearm owners are required to take appropriate measures to securely store fi****ms in circumstances where minors may have access to them.

Free firearm locking devices are available through Decatur Public Schools. They can be picked up at:
Davis Elementary School Office
Jr./Sr. High School Office
August 25 Open House: Locking devices will also be available in the school offices during Open House.

We encourage families who have fi****ms in their homes to take advantage of these free locking devices and ensure that fi****ms are stored securely and out of the reach of children. Secure storage helps protect our children and our community.

Post-Graduation Opportunities Informational Packet

Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1293 requires traditional public school districts, intermediate school districts, public school academies, and nonpublic schools to provide each student enrolled in grades 8–12 with an informational packet on post-graduation opportunities no later than October 1.

The Michigan Department of Education is providing the Post-Graduation Opportunities Informational Packet to support fall planning and communication with students and families.

Districts and schools may add the packet to their websites or incorporate it into existing resources; however, the packet must also be directly distributed to students in either an electronic or non-electronic format.

Additional information to support implementation is available on the Post-Graduation Opportunities Informational Packet website. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Pathfinder Promotional Toolkit for Partners also provides suggestions for sharing this resource with students, parents, counselors, and educators.

Questions regarding the Post-Graduation Opportunities Informational Packet may be directed to Ann-Marie Mapes at [email protected].

The Post-Graduation Opportunities Informational Packet is available at:

Safety Is a Community Effort
As we get ready to welcome students back, our Decatur Public Schools bus drivers are ready for the school year! In the days leading up to the first bell, you may see our buses out in the community as drivers practice their routes, evaluate each stop for visibility and safety, and familiarize themselves with their schedules.

Our drivers are working hard to ensure they are prepared to safely transport students and support families from the very first day of school. School bus safety is a community effort, and we all have an important role to play.

Parents and guardians: Please remind students to stay at least 10 feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus and to wait for the driver’s signal before boarding.

Motorists: When a school bus displays yellow flashing lights, slow down and prepare to stop as the bus prepares to load or unload students. When the bus displays red flashing lights, motorists must come to a complete stop from either direction.

Together, we can help keep our students safe as they travel to and from school each day. Welcome back, Decatur! Let’s make it a fantastic—and safe—school year!
