🌟 Teamwork Tuesday: Welcoming Andrea Maple! 🌟

We are super excited about Andrea taking the Assistant Director position on our Leadership Team! She brings a wealth of passion, dedication, and experience to MPSED. Here’s a quick Q&A to help you get to know her better:

🎓 Her Journey
Andrea earned her degree in Special Education from SIUE and started her career with Carlinville SD, teaching Cross Cat LS and SED for 7 years. She returned home to Decatur in 2018 to teach at Robertson Charter School, joining MPSED as an SEA in 2019!

💪 Overcoming Challenges & Proud Achievements
Balancing It All: Balancing a demanding career while being a mom (including 3–4 years as a single mom) taught her strength and perseverance. She credits her family for making it all possible!
First-Gen Master’s: She is proud to be the first in her family to earn a master's degree!
Building Bridges: Her favorite accomplishment is building positive relationships with families who feel intimidated by the IEP process.

💡 What She Wishes People Knew
"How many people are behind the scene to provide proper care and education for our students."

⚡ Quick Takeaways
Productivity Secret: "Lists are key. Make a list, do the hardest things first."
Downtime Favorite: Reality TV for some well-deserved "brain-off, relax-and-do-nothing time."

👉 Join us in welcoming Andrea to the Leadership Team and thanking her for everything she does for our students and community! Be sure to drop some love in the comments!!💙👏🎉

🌟 Teamwork Tuesday: Meet Our Incoming Director, Liz Lang! 🌟

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that on July 1st, Liz Lang will officially transition into her new role as the Director of MPSED! Liz is already a familiar, deeply valued face around here, having spent the last three years serving our special education community - first as an SEA and most recently as our Assistant Director. As we gear up for another incredible school year, we couldn't be more excited to have her leading the team!

To celebrate her transition, we sat down with Liz to get a glimpse into her 30-year journey in education, her proudest achievements, and a few fun facts you might not know about her:

🍎 A Lifelong Passion for Education: Liz has always known that she wanted to be a teacher. Over her incredible 30-year career, she has worn many hats, including working as a Special Olympics track and field coach.

🏆 A Lasting Legacy: At a former district in Champaign, Liz created the very first Essential Skills program - an achievement so impactful that there is a “founded by” plaque outside a classroom to commemorate her efforts!

🧩 The Big Picture: When asked what she wishes people knew about the Director role, Liz notes that it encompasses the whole system, not just individual parts. Her unique perspective helps bring everything and everyone together harmoniously.

🤝 Words of Wisdom: Liz lives by two great pieces of advice. For life: The Golden Rule (treating others fairly is key). For work: “I don’t know everything, and that’s okay.”

☕ Outside the Office: When she isn’t steering the ship at MPSED, you can find Liz tackling complex Saturday and Sunday crossword puzzles, getting lost in a great mystery like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or recharging with a walk and a solid cup of coffee.

🪂 Fun Fact: Behind her grounded leadership is a total thrill-seeker! Liz loves roller coasters, has been bungee jumping, and has even completed a solo skydive!

Please join us in giving Liz a massive congratulations on her new role, and be sure to drop some love in the comments! We are so incredibly lucky to have her vision, experience, and heart guiding MPSED into this next chapter. 🚀 🎉

Learning is sweet (and a little sour!) 🍋✨

Monday was all about hands-on learning. Our students did an amazing job following a recipe to mix up some refreshing lemon shake-ups. Afterward, they explored their creative side with some messy, fun sensory paint and art activities!🥤🎨

We love seeing their independence and creativity shine. Check out some highlights from our day below! 👇📸

Cool weather couldn't rain on the parade last week!🌦️The Junior High Life Skills students had a fantastic day adapting to the elements. When it got a bit too chilly for the Mt. Zion Recreation Department Fletcher Park splash pad, they pivoted to playground fun without missing a beat. They finished the day warm and cozy at the Mt. Zion District Library enjoying indoor activities and a little more weather watching. Way to go, crew!📚🛝

Perfect weather + amazing animals, yay! 🦎🐑🌞

On the first Thursday of June, our Junior High Summer Enrichment class took advantage of the Free Admission Day at Scovill Zoo! The sun was shining, the breeze was perfect, and the students had an absolute blast exploring and learning.

We love seeing our students smile while learning outside the classroom! What's your favorite animal to visit at Scovill? Drop a comment and let us know!! 👇
