When Orunmila was Olokun’s babalawo of choice, she was wealthy and expansive beyond comparison. Among his many duties, Orunmila was the master of ceremonies for Olokun’s annual festival.

Every year, he would make a grand entrance by descending from the ceiling. Perhaps it was Orunmila’s showmanship, or his proficiency; but something evoked great envy in his colleagues. They conspired to unseat him and assume his duties in Olokun’s palace.

They colluded with his wife, stole his implements and threw them into the ocean just days before the festival. Orunmila went to cast Ifa; it was IreteOgbe that appeared on the tray. The awo advised Orunmila to sacrifice the biggest fish he could find in the market. He complied.

Meanwhile, the festival had begun. The conspirators urged Olokun to let them replace Orunmila. She refused. At home, Orunmila opened the fish, he found his implements inside! The wife started to tremble. She immediately confessed to her part in the conspiracy.

Orunmila then made his way to the festival. As the conspirators were slandering him, Orunmila’s voice rang from in the ceiling; Eriwo yaaaaa!!! Orunmila descended with his implements!!! The enemies scattered!!!

Ifa was vindicated. Sacrifice prevailed. Edu won the day. Today, let us give reverence for the perfect and infallible wisdom of our beloved father, Orunmila Agbonniregun. Adupe lowo Orunmila!!!

When Olokun, Olosa and Atan went to consult Ifa in order to become great, each was told to acquire 200 dried rats. It was a major undertaking, that took almost a year to complete.

Along the way, Olokun would return from the hunt hungry. Likewise, his wife would sometimes be very hungry too. But they were committed to completing the sacrifice in full. So they never ate a single morsel.

Olosa as well would sometimes return hungry. Finding his wife hungry too, they would occasionally partake of the capture.

Atan, on the other hand, would eat as much as he caught! And whatever he didn’t eat himself, his wife would surly consume.

When it came time to sacrifice, Olokun gave the full portion. He became the lord of the ocean. Olosa managed to bring most of the offering and became the lord of the lagoon. Atan brought almost nothing and was left to govern the swamps.
