‼️Long post alert. But it’s important…
Sometimes, kids just need something that needs them.
We see it all the time with our boys and the HMS ROOTS chickens. There’s something about having real work to do — work that matters, work that isn’t always easy, and work that someone (or something) is depending on you to finish.
They feed. They water. They clean. They haul. They check on the chickens and each other. They divide up the work and figure out how to get it done together.
And while they’re doing it, they’re still asking, “Am I going to miss class?” or “When can I make up my assignment?” They’re learning that responsibility isn’t just taking care of the chickens. It’s taking care of their schoolwork, communicating with their teachers, keeping their commitments, helping the person beside them, and understanding that being needed doesn’t excuse them from everything else that needs them, too.
There’s a lot of energy in middle school boys. Give that energy a purpose, some good hard work, a little dirt, a flock of chickens depending on them, and people who trust them to get the job done — and you get to watch something pretty special happen.
The chickens give them an outlet. The work gives them purpose. The responsibility gives them ownership. And working toward a common goal teaches them that their contribution matters.
That’s the heart of HMS ROOTS.
Yes, we’re raising chickens. But more importantly, we’re giving kids a place to work hard, be needed, take responsibility, and be proud of what they accomplish together.
And that might just be the best thing we grow around here. 💚
