Each spring and fall, migrating birds traveling across southeast Michigan are drawn to the UM-Dearborn campus, a rare urban oasis surrounded by development. Recognizing the important role the campus plays in supporting local wildlife, students, faculty, and staff have come together to reduce bird collisions and create a safer habitat for migrating species.
The initiative has also become a powerful way to engage students in hands-on environmental stewardship. Volunteer walks and training sessions led by the Student Sustainability Coalition and Planet Blue Ambassadors teach participants how to identify, document, and safely respond to bird collisions while contributing to meaningful conservation efforts.
