BA 101 students got an inside look at entrepreneurship during their latest Freshman Friday's experience at Detroit’s Eastern Market.

Students explored the market’s incubator kitchen and accelerator, learning how aspiring entrepreneurs can access low-cost resources to grow, scale and build fully operating businesses. They also heard from entrepreneurs and small business leaders about manufacturing, business growth and the challenges of entrepreneurship.

The experience left students "excited, intrigued, and optimistic" about the resources and possibilities available to entrepreneurs in Detroit

It’s another example of what Freshman Fridays is all about: getting students out of the classroom and into the places where business is happening, connecting what they’re learning with the people and organizations putting it into practice.

An internship can be much more than a line on a resume. It can shape a student’s skills, confidence and career direction.

For College of Business senior Aleeya Thacker, internships at StockX and Plante Moran transformed classroom knowledge into real-world impact. From supporting promotional campaigns and brand partnerships to translating complex financial information into compelling client proposals, Aleeya gained hands-on experience that reinforced her passion for marketing and her long-term goal of becoming an entrepreneur.

Just as importantly, her journey shows how campus experiences, faculty mentorship and career support can open doors to meaningful opportunities. Aleeya’s success is a powerful reminder that internships help students build professional networks, discover their strengths and confidently take the next step toward their futures.

Prepare, Practice, and Make Your Case.

Planning to compete in the inaugural iLabs Case Competition? Start strong by attending the Case Competition Workshop to sharpen your strategy, teamwork, problem solving, and presentation skills. On Friday, September 25, you will practice analyzing challenges, developing strategies, collaborating effectively, and delivering persuasive presentations. Attend with your team or register individually to be placed with other students. Workshop attendance is strongly encouraged for all competition participants and required to be considered for a regional or national case competition travel team.

Step Up, Stand Out, and Make Your Case.

UM-Dearborn students are invited to participate in the inaugural iLabs Case Competition for a chance to win a cash prize, gain practical business experience, and add an impressive accomplishment to their resumes.

Planning to compete? Make the Case Competition Workshop your essential first step. On Friday, September 25, you will practice analyzing challenges, developing strategies, collaborating effectively, and delivering persuasive presentations. Attend with your team or register individually to be placed with other students. Workshop attendance is strongly encouraged for all competition participants and required to be considered for a regional or national case competition travel team.

Then, put your skills into action at the Case Competition on Friday, November 6. Teams of three or four will collaborate to solve a business challenge and present their recommendations while strengthening essential skills in critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and problem solving.

Workshop registration closes September 23.
Competition registration closes October 11.

Set yourself up for success!

University of Michigan-Dearborn College of Business students can get additional support this fall through Supplemental Instruction (SI).

SI offers free, peer-led study sessions where students can:
-Review course material and compare notes
-Practice problem-solving
-Discuss readings and key concepts
-Strengthen study and organizational skills
-Prepare for quizzes and exams

Sessions are led by students who have previously succeeded in the course. No appointment is necessary. Drop in whenever you need support!

Undergraduate research was on display at UM-Dearborn’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Showcase!

Two College of Business research projects explored real-world challenges in health care and the automotive industry:

Rukaya Alhemuzi, mentored by Charu Chandra, explored global health topics for older adults, including challenges and opportunities in care delivery.

Jack Borenski, mentored by Yan Xie and Yi-Su Chen, examined how supply chain configuration can contribute to financial risk in the automotive industry.

Through SURE, students gain hands-on experience, work closely with faculty mentors and apply what they learn in the classroom to important questions facing businesses and communities.

What does ethical leadership look like in practice? Sometimes the most valuable lessons come from leaders willing to speak candidly about their own experiences.

As part of Freshman Fridays, BA 101 students welcomed Richard Haddrill ’74, Executive Chairman of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, for a conversation about his career, corporate ethics and the importance of addressing challenges directly. He also answered questions from students about his experiences and lessons learned throughout his career.

Thank you, Richard, for sharing your time, insights and enthusiasm for a career in business with our students.
