Mike Schmitt, Dearborn High's journalism teacher, has officially been awarded the Golden Pen Award by the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), which is the highest honor MIPA bestows on a current adviser - and it can only be won once in an advisor's career!

This prestigious award is the highest statewide honor for a high school journalism teacher in Michigan. What makes it incredibly special is that it recognizes an outstanding current adviser of a scholastic student media outlet based on student-nominated portfolios, with the final selection made by past honorees. This speaks volumes about the immense impact Mike has on our students, mentoring them in their journalistic pursuits.

Congratulations, Mike!

During the spring break, the robotics team completed a highly successful run in its two competitions of the season.

The team put in an incredible amount of hard work and dedication leading up to these events, and it truly paid off on the field. Their performance was a testament to their technical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities under pressure.

First Competition: The team successfully navigated their first event of the year on the first weekend of break, 03/27-03/29, demonstrating the capabilities of their new robot design. The team finished the qualification games on 12th position out of 43. This allowed them to become the captains of Alliance 7 (out of 😎.

Second Competition: The team finished qualification games on position 9 (out of 40) and became the captain of Alliance 6 (out of 😎. The team was also awarded the “Autonomous Award”. Evaluation for this award was based on the robot’s ability to sense its surroundings, position itself or onboard mechanisms appropriately, and execute tasks.

This success wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of our students and the support of the volunteers that assist the robotics team.

Congratulations to the robotics team and also math teacher and robotics team coach, Ioana Vescan!
