America Saves Week Tip 5: Save as a Family

We start our children young with almost everything— sports, school, so why not saving?

Whether a child is two or twenty-two, we can (and should) help them learn about money.

Not sure how? Our website is full of FREE resources that will help you teach engaging and relatable money saving concepts to kids of all ages: http://bit.ly/3aWSdP3.

What fun money saving tips and strategies are you teaching your kids at home?

One of my favorite methods to use with our 6-year-old daughter is Spend, Save, Share. When she gets money for birthdays, holidays, or for helping around the house, we help her divide it out. 10% goes to save, $10 to share, and 80% spend. Such an easy way to begin teaching her how to manage money!

America Saves Week Tip 4: Reduce Debt

We talk a lot about the importance of saving. But here’s something you may not hear as often: when you pay down your debt, you ARE saving! Actively reducing your debt means you’re saving on interest, avoiding late fees, and maintaining or increasing your credit score.

Try these simple strategies to reduce your debt:

1️⃣ Make a list of all your outstanding debts including the interest rates.
2️⃣ Pick your debt reduction strategy:

‼️Highest interest rate method - List your debts from highest interest rate to lowest and pay off balances with the highest rates first. Pro: will save you more money in the long run.

❄️Snowball method - List your debts from smallest to largest in terms of the amount you owe and pay off the lowest balances first. Pro: can help you keep up momentum and see progress.

How you tackle your debt is up to you. Either way, you’re taking steps in the right direction!

America Saves Week Tip 3: Save to Retire

What are your retirement goals?

🌎Traveling?
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Spending more time with family?
💵Financial stability?

Are you on track to achieve those goals?

Retirement often seems far away, so it’s easy to push it aside as a “someday” and focus more on everyday expenses. But the earlier you start to prepare, the easier it is to save. Did you know that very few Americans have a plan for retirement savings that will actually cover their desired lifestyle?

Take some time to consider your retirement needs and make a plan to save enough for the retirement you want.

America Saves Week Tip 2: Save for the Unexpected

Do you have an emergency fund? If the past year has taught us anything, it is that we should be prepared for the unexpected. While we all have future savings goals, being able to cover things like a car breakdown, a dental bill, or even a last-minute fun treat should be a top priority.

Today, I encourage you to save for the unexpected. Here are a tips to start and build an emergency fund:

👣Set “small step” goals. If you’re starting at “0”, saving enough money to cover even one month of expenses can seem overwhelming. Start with a goal of $500; then, $1,000 and work your way up. Eventually, you should aim for an emergency savings fund large enough to cover at least two to six months of living expenses.

⚠️Save in a safe place. Keep your emergency savings in a separate bank or credit union savings account. If it’s in your checking account, you’ll be tempted to spend it.

💵Automate. There’s that word again! Have a portion of your paycheck direct deposited into a savings account.

👀Find extra ways to save. Brown bag lunch, switch to generics, clip coupons, utilize bonuses or extra money. Keep a spending journal and look for ways to cut expenses.

✍️Take the saver’s pledge. Join thousands of Arkansans who are making a commitment to save, pay down debt, and increase financial security. Take the pledge here:

As we head into flu season with COVID-19 cases on the rise, we are all concerned with ways to stay healthy. Staying home, maintaining social distance, regular handwashing, and wearing masks are the best ways to protect ourselves until most of the population is vaccinated. However, there are a few things we can do to help build immunity though diet and lifestyle:

🍏Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. Good sources of vitamin C includes peppers, berries, broccoli, citrus fruits, and spinach.
🍗Choose lean cuts of meat, low-fat dairy products like Greek yogurt or string cheese, or dried beans and lentils for protein.
🍞Include whole grains such as oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, bran cereal, or quinoa for adequate zinc and fiber.
🍅Add berries to iron-fortified cereals to boost iron absorption or include peppers and tomatoes in bean dishes.
💦Drink plenty of water - aim for at least 6 to 8 cups of water daily.
🥛Get enough vitamin D through dairy products, fatty fish, or dietary supplementation (if needed) if you can't get enough safely from the sun.
😴Get enough sleep.
🏃‍♂️Exercise regularly.
🤯Manage your stress levels.

A healthy lifestyle can't “cure” or even 100% prevent you from catching a virus like the coronavirus or the flu, but it can help strengthen immunity and reduce the risk of serious complications if you do get sick.
