May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time that aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and educate the public about mental illness and wellness. It’s an opportunity to challenge the misconceptions that keep too many people suffering in silence and to remind ourselves that mental health matters just as much as physical health.

🖤What Can We Do?
It’s time to replace these myths with truth. Here’s how we can begin:

Start the conversation: Talking openly about mental health in our community can help reduce stigma and encourage others to seek support.

Seek professional help: Therapy, counseling, or even support groups can offer valuable tools for healing.

Practice self-care: Take time for yourself—whether it’s through mindfulness, physical activity, or spending time with loved ones.

What’s one small step you can take this month to support your mental health?

The Bethune-Cookman University Department of Psychology along with the entire College of Nursing and Health Sciences proudly celebrates Dr. Dashana Lane and Ms. Hardy for representing B-CU at the 2026 Institute for Psychology of Black Womanhood Scholars Symposium held at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

This prestigious gathering convenes scholars examining the psychological, cultural, and social dimensions of Black womanhood. Dr. Lane and Ms. Hardy presented their research alongside leading scholars in sessions exploring topics such as Black feminist scholarship, resilience, mindfulness, identity, and community well-being.

Dr. Lane, an Assistant Professor at Bethune-Cookman University and Licensed School Psychologist, brings a powerful interdisciplinary lens to her work. Her scholarship integrates Black feminist theory, intersectionality, and participatory action research to examine how race, gender, and class intersect in the lives of Black women and girls. Her current research project, A Different World, investigates systemic racism experienced by Black women in graduate education at predominantly white institutions.

Participation in this competitive institute reflects the growing national visibility of B-CU Psychology faculty scholarship and the department’s commitment to research that advances equity, cultural understanding, and community empowerment.

We are especially excited about Dr. Lane and Ms. Hardy’s vision to start a Psychology of Black Women course and to bring B-CU female students to the institute next year, creating opportunities for mentorship, research exposure, and scholarly development for the next generation of psychologists.

Congratulations to Dr. Dashana Lane and Ms. Hardy for representing Bethune-Cookman University with excellence.
