Last day of Student Employee Appreciation Week!

EFRC would like to highlight Riley and share his academic and professional journey in aviation.

Riley has successfully balanced his academic responsibilities while being able to fly regularly and participating in extracurricular activities like ERAU's AIAA Design Build Fly (DBF) club where he has been the team's competition and test pilot for the past two years. Additionally, he has earned his Instrument rating, contributed to several research projects at the EFRC, and completed three internships, including one at NASA.

Curious about his work at the EFRC and how he achieved three internships? Follow us and stay tuned for part 2!

🚀 Meet Esteban Ruiz, Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering! 🌌

Last semester, he had the incredible opportunity to dive into the aerospace industry with Gulfstream as a Stress Engineer Co-Op in the Stress Department. From running internal loads for the GIV program to collaborating with various engineering teams on their projects, every day brought new challenges and discoveries.

One of the highlights was the chance to apply his skills in real-world scenarios and see how they contributed to the bigger picture. Whether it was analyzing data or problem-solving alongside seasoned professionals, each task reinforced his passion for aerospace engineering and showed him the endless possibilities in this field.

This experience means the world to him. It wasn't just about gaining technical knowledge; it was about validating his dreams and aspirations. It showed him that the path he has chosen is not only attainable but also filled with opportunities for growth and fulfillment.

To anyone seeking an internship, his advice is simple: hone your skills. Whether it's mastering software like CATIA or delving deep into a coding language, having a strong foundation will set you apart and open doors to exciting opportunities.

Remember, every skill you acquire is an investment in your future, enabling you to navigate between departments or even companies with confidence.

An Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach Campus Aerospace Engineering student, Connor had worked as a Ground Software Engineer for the Integrated Fluid Systems team at the United Launch Alliance (ULA) in Colorado this Summer. One of his jobs at the ULA was writing requirements for the launch team's programs to control the ground system involving pumps, sensors, and mechanics on the ground as the rocket prepares for liftoff. His team was responsible for designing the software which controlled all those parts, and deciding how that information would be displayed to the operators. He was exposed to the fluids systems, software systems, and launch operations, and through this experience, he could see a large part of what goes into successfully preparing and launching a rocket.

Connor said the launch operations were the best part; seeing all the systems they worked with being used by the operators taking a payload into orbit gave him pride. He added that the catered food in the launch operations room was also a plus, though if there was catering, it often meant that operations would be going well into the night.

This internship was his first opportunity to get connected to the space industry. He elaborated that he always thought the space industry would be a good fit for him, and this internship helped him confirm that this was where he wanted to end up out of college.

“With this experience, I have finally taken my first steps in the industry.”

During his internship, he was also given the opportunity to meet leaders in the company and hear the perspectives they had on the future of the industry.

Connor also left a few words to the students seeking internships.

"When you apply (for internships), don't limit yourself to just one discipline. Especially with an aerospace degree, the skills you learn in school aren't going to limit you to just one job title. I thought I would end up working as a test engineer or quality engineer based on what most of my peers were getting, but my experience landed me a niche software position. Even if you think your major doesn't perfectly align with a job title, if you think you have the experience, apply!"

He is an undergraduate student working on Aerospace Engineering, Astronautics concentration, and Computer Science as his minor.
