DSC Graduate Finds Success in a Creative Career Path

Jessica Linkinhoker enrolled at Daytona State to pursue a science-related degree but switched majors after perusing the DSC website for programs offering more creative opportunities.

“The digital media program caught my eye because of how broad the program was. It wasn't just photography or graphic design. It brought together so many creative interests of mine into one degree and would allow me to pinpoint what I was really passionate about.”

Linkinhoker built her portfolio shooting photos for the Mary Karl College of Workforce & Continuing Education and designing for a non-profit and local businesses. She earned a scholarship and earned multiple awards for her portfolio through the American Advertising Federation of Daytona Beach.

“My instructors were amazing. Beyond being instructors, they were mentors. I owe a lot of my success to them in this program. While I put in a lot of work, they were there constantly guiding me and answering questions.”

The program required an internship and Linkinhoker knew she wanted to pursue one that included elements of design. One of the many she applied for was for an art intern position with Avalere Health. Soon she was designing marketing collateral for rare disease treatments.

“I quickly fell in love with the work and knew this was a field I wanted to be in.”

When the internship ended, the company offered her a part-time position as an Associate Art Director while she completed her degree. When she graduated in May 2023, she was promoted to a full time as an Associate Art Director. And she’s finding time to give back, by sitting on the Digital and Interactive Media Program advisory board.

“After my time in the program and having the support and mentorship I needed, I knew being on the board could help others. I think it’s important to use the skills and knowledge you learn in life to help others follow their dreams.”

Her advice to anyone considering DSC?

“Just do it! It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you’ve taken a class, how old you are, or what your story is. DSC has the resources to help you be successful in whatever you want to do.”
