Hi Ron,
These days "jazz" has a very narrow meaning.
To many people, jazz boils down to certain artists,
certain songs, a certain historical narrative (Ragtime,
Dixieland, Big Band, Bebop, etc.).
It wasn't always this way.
Jazz was, for a better part of the 20th century
(1920s-1950s), THE popular music in America and its
effects are still heard throughout the various genres.
For example, when asked, how many rock and roll
legends attribute their core inspiration to musicians
like Gene Krupa, John Coltrane, and even Ornette
Coleman? A lot!
American music *is* jazz, whether the larger world
and news media recognizes it or not.
Beyond its virtuosity - and its sheer fun - what is jazz?
It's an attitude.
It's a celebration of freedom, innovation, and merit
that comes from dedicated study and practice,
and the demonstration that all men and women
are created equal and are brothers and sisters.
There are not many professions that have these
ideals baked into their day-to-day operation.
On this day, when we reflect on America
and what it has contributed to the world,
beyond the enjoyment of the music, this is
what keeps us at Jazz on the Tube going.
Jazz is a treasure for all humanity and
reminds us of our best selves and our
very highest values as human beings
and Americans.
