United Theological Seminary is pleased to welcome Rev. Dr. Paul Tsuchido Shew as Visiting Professor of Methodist Education and Global Mission for the 2026-2027 academic year. Dr. Shew is visiting from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, where he serves as Professor in the College of Literature and University Chaplain. Founded in 1874 by the Methodist Church, Aoyama Gakuin University is now among the top universities in Japan.

“I was ordained an elder in the West Ohio Conference, and coming to United is in part a homecoming,” said Dr. Shew. “It is also a continuation. For nearly two decades I have worked with Methodist schools and colleges across Asia, and I have seen how much our institutions gain when the connections between them are living rather than nominal. United and Aoyama Gakuin are separated by an ocean, but we belong to the same family. I am honored to spend this year here, and I expect to learn at least as much as I bring.”
