ASI's Food and Society Coordinator/ Deputy Director of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program - SAREP, Gail Feenstra, recently delivered the keynote at this year's "Increasing the Capacity for Place-based Food Systems Conference.
“Our place-based food systems operate in conjunction with—sometimes separately, sometimes integrated with—an industrial food system that may not always embody the same values. This more industrial food system emphasizes efficiency, profit, and power in ways that are more narrowly construed, sometimes at the expense of other environmental and social values. This apparent tension with place-based food systems leads to many of the challenges that follow.”

Have you heard?
“This work coming out of Russell Ranch at UC Davis is very timely as the state invests in programs to sequester carbon in soils,” said Secretary Karen Ross of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. “Carbon sequestration in soils through the addition of compost is a key practice in our Healthy Soils Program and we are delighted that the science and policy efforts are aligning and supporting each other.”

Compost Key to Sequestering Carbon in the Soil
By moving beyond the surface level and literally digging deep, scientists at the University of California, Davis, found that compost is a key to storing carbon in semi-arid cropland soils, a strategy for offsetting CO2 emissions. For their 19-year study, published in the journal Global Change Biolog...

If you purchase or are interested in purchasing raw elderberry ingredients, we invite you to complete a survey!
UC Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education Program (SAREP) is conducting research into the market potential for elderberry/elderflowers grown in California. We are investigating the viability for California farmers to sell elderberries as a commercial crop, and exploring the market potential for bringing some of the out-of-state production home.
