Twenty-four students representing Nanjing Agricultural University, Yangzhou University, Huazhong Agriculture University and South China Agricultural University participated in the 2026 Winter One Health Conference for Future Global Health. Their eagerness for interdisciplinary learning and the One Health approach added energy to the conference from the very beginning.

The conference, held January 26 – February 6, was hosted by the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security (WIFSS) at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. Joining WIFSS as co-hosts were the Global One Health Research Partnership (GOHRP) of Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU), Massey University, New Zealand, Wageningen University and Research (WUR), and UC Davis. The conference was sponsored by the Cyrus Tang Foundation.

What an incredible week of learning, collaboration, and innovation!

Students from colleges across multiple states came together to explore the critical role of on-farm biosecurity in protecting animal health, safeguarding our food system, and addressing real-world challenges through the One Health approach.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged with experts, collaborated with peers, and developed biosecurity plans for a working dairy farm.

In this recap video, hear directly from our students as they share their experiences, key takeaways, and reflections on what they learned during this unique hands-on educational opportunity.

🚨 Conference Starts Monday! 🚨

We’re excited to welcome 50 students from multiple colleges and states as they come together at UC Davis for the On-Farm Biosecurity Conference hosted by the Western Institute for Food Safety & Security and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Starting Monday, June 1–3, participants will engage in an immersive learning experience focused on protecting animal health and strengthening our food systems.

Over the next three days, students will:

✅ Learn the importance of on-farm biosecurity in protecting animal health and ensuring the safety and security of our food supply
✅ Explore the concept of One Health and discover how collaboration across disciplines drives effective problem-solving
✅ Work together to develop real-world biosecurity plans for an actual working dairy farm
✅ Present their innovative solutions to peers and a panel of college faculty

This conference is building the next generation of leaders in animal health, food safety, and agricultural biosecurity.

Ram Khatiwoda, farm manager of the International Rescue Committe's New Roots Sacramento farm in West Sacramento, has purchased his own farm in Rio Linda, Healthy Route Farm, which has hundreds of mature fruit trees in need of pruning. Both of these farms are California Alliance for Community Composting supported community compost hubs in the Sacramento region.

You’re invited to practice and develop your pruning skills on mature apples, peaches, plums, pluots, citrus and more, while helping Ram to get the trees ready for the approaching growing season. Bring your pruning tools and orchard ladders if you have them. My community pruning tool set will also be available for use in making the right tool for the job available when you need it.

This series is designed to help Common Ground Church upgrade the orchard in their Urban Oasis Community Garden (a community compost hub) while offering you opportunities to develop irrigation and soil care skills and experience.

The final event in the series will have volunteers helping to sheet mulch the orchard, applying layers of Worm Whisperer Farms vermicompost, butcher paper (as a biodegradable w**d barrier) and arborist wood chips.

After lunch Domimic will guide volunteers in applying their developing pruning skills in the orchard.
