Prof. Lauren Lindstrom has been invited to serve as a Foreign Expert for Changchun University in China, where she will provide lectures, consultation, and research collaboration focused on inclusion for children with disabilities. Beginning in September, Dr. Lindstrom will work with university faculty and schools both virtually and through in-person visits funded by the regional Chinese government.

Prof. Marcela Cuellar received a $475,000 grant that will build on her work in higher education equity and Latinx student success. The grant, from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, is for the study “Mobilizing Opportunity: Examining How Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) Advance Social Mobility for Historically Underserved Students.” Her research will explore the role HSIs play in supporting students and shaping equitable economic mobility.

A new body of research gives insight into the future of local and statewide education ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections.
Getting Down to Facts III, a research effort led by the Stanford SCALE Initiative, brings together leading experts across California to examine the biggest challenges facing schools. Sixteen UC Davis researchers contributed, exploring topics that span chronic absenteeism, teacher retention, and student equity.

Every spring, our credential students get to nominate their resident teachers for our annual Mentorship Award. One multiple subject and one single subject resident teacher are selected based on students’ nomination letters. This year’s winners are agriculture teacher Sarah Ronayne (nominated by Caitlin Holder) and fourth grade teacher Matthew Tealdi (nominated by Bryan Tan)!

Ph.D. candidate Anna Peñaloza recently co-hosted a nature journaling event for fifth grade students at the UC Davis Arboretum through Hermanas Escritoras, a women-led UC Davis student organization focused on science writer identities. As students moved through the Arboretum, Hermanas Escritoras members led them in conversations and activities focused on nature, science, and self-expression.
"I see the work we do with Hermanas Escritoras as empowering future generations of scientists and science writers," Anna said.

School of Education graduation speaker Jaime Ramirez-Mendoza is graduating next week with a Ph.D. in school organization and education policy. His dissertation research examines how financial aid systems can create additional barriers for students of color as they navigate the path to college.

Though chronic absenteeism is slowly declining post-pandemic, nearly 1 in 5 students in California still missed 10% or more of the 2024-25 school year. In their report, "The State of Chronic Absenteeism in California: Projections, Reasons, and Solutions," Prof. Kevin Gee and Peter Yu predict future trends in statewide chronic absenteeism, explore why students are missing school, and offer options for California to lead the way in tackling this multifaceted issue.
