Poaching of salmon by catching via net is illegal. This young man was chased off the creek at the Reserve, yesterday, trying to catch spawning salmon while walking through their spawning grounds! If you see someone poaching, call CDFW game wardens at 888-334-2258. There is also a smartphone app you can download at the Apple and Google App stores.

Did you know that there are Salmon on the UC Davis Campus?! There have been multiple sightings this year along the stretch of Putah Creek in the UCD Putah Creek Riparian Reserve so if you have a chance to make it out for a walk along Putah Creek on South or west campus, keep on the look out for salmon returning up stream to spawn!

Remember to send any observations of salmon to: [email protected] (include date, location, # fish, etc). And, please do not disturb the fish and/or their nesting gravels or trespass on private property.

The salmon restoration project of Lower Putah Creek is developing into a major accomplishment. If you know the area, please remember that most of the creek is bordered by private property. We do have salmon spawning in the Winters Putah Creek Park section which is not yet completed. You can see fish off the bike bridge. That area will eventually support a significant salmon spawning area. I am monitoring the depth and quality of redds in several study sites.

Great new research coming out of UC to help conserve water, how do you feel about drinking reclaimed water?

Can science solve the public's revulsion to recycled water? As California enters its fourth year of severe drought, the question on everyone’s mind is “where do we get more water?” Many point to desalination, but Brent Haddad, a professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has an additional, more affordable approach in mind…
