HOW TO WRITE A RESEARCH GAP STATEMENT

To write a clear gap statement, follow this template:
"Although several studies have examined [broad topic], limited attention has been paid to [specific aspect], particularly in [specific context]. This study addresses this gap by [research objective]."

Break it down:
1. Broad topic: Identify the general area of research.
2. Specific aspect: Pinpoint the under-explored or neglected aspect within the broad topic.
3. Specific context: Specify the context or population being studied (e.g., location, industry, demographic).
4. Research objective: Clearly state what your study aims to achieve or investigate.

Example:
"Although several studies have examined the impact of climate change on agriculture, limited attention has been paid to its effects on small-scale farmers in Nigeria. This study addresses this gap by investigating the adaptive strategies used by small-scale farmers in Nigeria to mitigate climate change impacts."

This template helps you craft a concise and focused research gap statement that justifies your study's relevance and originality.

📌 What's a RESEARCH GAP?
A research gap refers to something that is missing, under-explored, outdated, or inadequately addressed in existing studies. In simpler terms, it's what we still don't know despite many studies on a particular topic. This gap can be related to knowledge, methodology, population, context, or theory, and identifying it is crucial for justifying and giving direction to new research.

The key factors of a research gap include:
1. Something missing or under-explored: An area or topic that hasn't been adequately studied or addressed.
2. Outdated information: Existing studies may be old, and new research could provide updated insights.
3. Inadequately addressed issues: Topics that have been studied but lack depth or thorough analysis.

These gaps can be categorized into different types, such as:
- Knowledge gap: Lack of sufficient information on a topic.
- Methodological gap: Limited or repetitive use of research methods.
- Population gap: Certain groups or demographics being underrepresented.
- Contextual (geographical) gap: Limited research in specific regions or contexts.
- Theoretical gap: Lack of strong theoretical frameworks or foundations.

Identifying these gaps helps justify the need for new research, ensures originality, and makes the study relevant and impactful.

Dear graduates and would be graduates, have you ever heard of the APA Reference Formula? Either ways, we bring you a perfect breakdown of what it is. Enjoy your weekend with this piece 🧩

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗣𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Many graduate theses lose credibility not because of weak arguments—but because of incorrectly structured APA references.

The infographic highlights a critical principle: every APA journal reference follows a precise sequence. When this structure is misunderstood, citations become inconsistent, confusing, and academically weak.

A correctly structured APA journal reference includes:

1.Authors — Establishes scholarly ownership.

2.Publication Date — Situates research in time.

3.Article Title — Identifies the study focus.

4.Journal Title — Shows publication source.

5.Volume — Indicates journal series.

6.Issue — Specifies edition within volume.

7.Page Numbers — Locates the exact article.

Misplacing or omitting any of these elements signals poor academic rigor. Examiners often interpret inconsistent referencing as weak research discipline—even when the study itself is strong.

Understanding citation structure is not a formatting exercise. It is a credibility framework for scholarly writing.

Dear All,

For a while now, we noticed that a couple of students face immense difficulty in writing literature review, a very intricate part of a thesis/dissertation. So we thought it wise to bring to us, the well curated steps to accomplish that.

🫶🎉5 WAYS TO WRITE THE LITERATURE REVIEW PART OF RESEARCH PAPER.🎉🫶

Unlike research thesis, a research paper does not have a separate chapter for Literature Review. The Literature review is embedded into the introduction typically at the second paragraph. Here are 5 ways to write the Literature Review part of a Research Paper, embedded in the Introduction:

👍Style 1: The Simple Summary

- Briefly summarize relevant studies.
- Focus on key findings and methodologies.
- Identify gaps or limitations.

Example:
"Previous studies have investigated the impact of climate change on crop yields (Smith et al., 2020; Johnson et al., 2019). These studies found significant declines in yields due to temperature increases. However, few have examined the effects of precision irrigation on crop water productivity."

👍Style 2: The Critical Analysis

- Analyze and critique existing research.
- Identify methodological flaws or theoretical limitations.
- Highlight areas for improvement.

Example:
"While Smith et al. (2020) found correlations between climate change and crop yields, their methodology overlooked regional variability. Johnson et al. (2019) addressed this limitation, but their sample size was limited. This study builds upon these findings, incorporating more robust sampling and regional analysis."

👍Style 3: The Theoretical Framework

- Discuss relevant theoretical concepts.
- Explain how existing research supports or challenges these concepts.
- Position your study within the theoretical framework.

Example:
"Climate change impacts on agriculture are often framed within the vulnerability framework (IPCC, 2013). Studies by Smith et al. (2020) and Johnson et al. (2019) support this framework, highlighting the vulnerability of crop yields to temperature increases. This study extends this framework, exploring the role of precision irrigation in enhancing resilience."

👍Style 4: The Thematic Review

- Organize literature around key themes.
- Discuss how themes relate to your research question.
- Identify gaps or areas for further exploration.

Example:
"Research on climate change and agriculture can be categorized into three themes: yield impacts (Smith et al., 2020), water management (Johnson et al., 2019), and adaptation strategies (Brown et al., 2018). This study focuses on the intersection of water management and adaptation strategies, investigating precision irrigation's potential."

👍Style 5: The Integrative Review

- Synthesize findings from multiple studies.
- Identify patterns, inconsistencies, or debates.
- Position your study as a contribution to the ongoing discussion.

Example:
"A review of 15 studies on climate change and crop yields reveals inconsistent findings regarding the impact of temperature increases (Smith et al., 2020; Johnson et al., 2019; etc.). This study contributes to resolving this debate by examining the moderating effect of precision irrigation on crop water productivity."

Good morning dear all. Sure you all are doing well. Let's start our week with this amazing guide.

🎊👌Title: 9 STEPS TO CHOOSING A DEFENDABLE AND STANDARDIZED Master's/PhD RESEARCH TOPIC💯👌

A PhD research topic is neither an assemblage of buzzwords nor the regurgitation of the caprices and preferences of your Supervisor. A PhD research topic is decided from a non-negotiable iteratetive steps that progresses from known knowledge to specifics gaps.

Here are the 9 steps to deciding on a Defendable and rigorous PhD Research Topic;

1️⃣Know What a PhD Research is about
2️⃣ Decide on your Research Interest
3️⃣Find the current state of Knowledge in your field
4️⃣ Find the limitations of current studies in the current studies
5️⃣ Synthesize the gaps
6️⃣ Frame your initial topic
7️⃣ Find 10 works that supports the hypothesis of the topic
8️⃣Craft Research Questions
9️⃣ Refine the topic to a final state in the MPSA framework (Method - Problem - Solution - Application)

After these you can now draft your research proposal.
