CALL FOR PAPERS. For the 2026 Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies.

Theme: States and Empires in the Balkans

The theme of the 2026 Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) is States and Empires with a Spotlight on the Balkans. In an effort to take advantage of this opportunity, Dan Weiss from the University of Virginia is organizing a panel along this theme. If you would like to participate and are planning to attend ASEEES 2026 (Chicago) please email him ([email protected]) with a short (approx. 200-300 words) synopsis of your topic. Papers in any discipline are welcome as long as they deal, even tangentially, with the theme of States and Empires in the Balkans: Romans, Thracian, Dacian, Ottoman, Turkish, Austro-Hungarian, et al. We are keeping it general for now until we see who all is interested. Ideally, we would like to have a good spread across geography and time, but we are flexible.

The panel proposal is due March 1st, so please have your synopsis in to Dan by Friday, Feb 20th.

If you have any questions, contact Dan directly.

Panels entail presentation of prepared papers (distributed in advance to a discussant) on a related topic or theme, followed by structured discussion of those papers. Panels must have: 1 chair; a minimum of 3 to maximum of 4 papers; and at least 1 discussant, with a maximum of 2. If the panel includes a fourth paper, the length of the session does not change. While one role per participant is strongly preferred, the chair may serve also as a discussant or a paper presenter, if necessary. A paper presenter cannot be a discussant for the same panel on which they are presenting.

American Institute For Southeast European Studies – Connecting Intellectual Leaders 01/31/2026

As you know, late last year we received the fantastic news that AISEES was voted unanimously to be a member of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). CAORC validates the mission, value, and accomplishments of its members, and membership will clearly help AISEES grow in the coming years.

This is an achievement to which we owe a lot to you, the AISEES community! Without your support, we would not be able to offer such a robust program of fellowships, a lecture series, and other opportunities.

AISEES is a grassroots organization. We began with a Board of Trustees and a small number of members (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Texas at Austin) who believed in our Mission. Our membership now consists of 15 institutions and nearly 50 scholars and students. Most of our community members joined AISEES through a connection of theirs.

In this spirit, we are asking you to spread the word about AISEES to three of your colleagues. Ask them to join our FB page and/or to support us through membership. Even a small number of new members in 2026 will allow us to enhance our programs.
