IGPS is offering a new competition- GradSlam! http://ow.ly/HFLSe

GradSlam is a competition at the 2015 IGPS to find the best three-minute research presentation given by a UC Davis graduate or professional student. Students should present the significance and fundamental points of their work at UC Davis in a clear, direct, and interesting manner. Presentations should be prepared for a diverse audience comprised of students, faculty, and community members. There are multiple rounds of presentations - preliminaries, semifinals, and finals. The Dean of Graduate Studies will award a grand prize of $1,000, in addition to an all-expense paid trip (travel & hotel) to the UC-wide competition in the Bay Area! Art and Performance:
Performance pieces are to fit within a 15-minute space (longer pieces will only be considered if there is sufficient justification). This time includes set-up, take-down, and any introduction or closing description you want to give to your audience. Performances can involve more than one student, but one individual should be the organizer. You may wish to contact the symposium coordinator if you think your space requirements may be extraordinary.
Art exhibit applications can include one or more pieces; however, if you want to include art from multiple artists, you should check to see if the Application to Organize a Session at IGPS is more applicable to you.

Poster and Oral Presentations:
Posters and talks can be based on your own original research, or can be about campus related projects. For instance, if you have created a program, or started a student group on campus, and have interesting things to say about them, this is something you could present at IGPS. All applications will be considered regardless of topic or discipline. Oral presentations are limited to 10 minutes.
The Interdisciplinary Graduate and Professional Student Symposium is meant to be a venue for graduate and professional students from different disciplines to create a connection between their research or work and their audience. In your application and in your actual talk or poster, you should use language that is understandable to a general (though academic) audience. It is very important that you state why your work/ research is important, and what it is that you hope to accomplish, or what could be accomplished with it.

Student-Organized Sessions:
Sessions should be organized around a central theme, and the applicant is responsible for inviting the other graduate student speakers/performers/panelists/poster presenters/artists. You do not have to have everyone figured out now, but you should have a core group of individuals in mind. The applicant is responsible for all communication with presenters, including who is chosen to present, in what order they will present, and how long each presenter has to present (within the 45-minute session time slot). The applicant is welcome to be one of the invited speakers, but should not be the creator of any more than a third of the content represented. Preference will be given to well thought out sessions that capitalize on the interdisciplinary aspect of the conference, and to authors who can communicate their ideas well to a general audience.
This is also a great opportunity for you to showcase a topic of your interest to the campus community! More information regarding the conference, as well as examples of ideas for student-run sessions can be found on the IGPS website: http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/about/igps.html.
