This month, Dr. 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱 takes us behind the scenes of the highly anticipated 𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 — a prospective, double-masked, multicenter trial comparing clopidogrel vs. rivaroxaban for preventing recurrence of cardiogenic arterial thromboembolism (ATE) in cats.

What did the trial reveal?
- 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 well in prolonging time to ATE recurrence.
- Many cats lived far longer than expected — reinforcing that 𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆.

Dr. Brainard also reflects on the study’s outcomes, future directions, and the feasibility of complementary investigations that could build on these findings.

In human trauma patients there’s a growing interest in the use of 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 (SWB), as it offers red cells and plasma in physiologic ratios. New evidence also shows that platelets still play a role in clot formation — renewing attention on SWB as a 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

This month, we feature Dr. Anusha Balakrishnan BVSc, DACVECC, who shares insights on the recently published 𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦𝗩𝗲𝘁 Definitions for 𝗔𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 (JVECC, 2025).

Dr. Balakrishnan, who works at the Veterinary Emergency Group - developing training programs for emergency doctors, describes how the updated definitions were developed through expert consensus to reflect current diagnostic and therapeutic advances—including the integration of 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 and recognition of 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦.

We’re excited to share this month’s Suggested Readings from Dr. Duana McBride, BVSc, MSc, MVMedSc, DACVECC, DECVECC, Adjunct Professor at CityU Veterinary Medical Centre in Hong Kong.

Dr. McBride highlights a recent study exploring how 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗥 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Using high-fidelity simulation, the authors compared different group sizes and uncovered important insights into how team dynamics can shape outcomes in critical situations.

We are deeply honored to present this month’s Meet the Author feature, spotlighting a special issue on the Initiative 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀.

In this edition, Dr. Manuel Boller, chair of RECOVER Research and adjunct associate professor at the University of Calgary, and Dr. Jamie Burkitt, Guidelines Chair of RECOVER and faculty criticalist at UC Davis, reflect on the journey behind these new guidelines
VetUpdates.

They share 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 the focus on this domain, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱, and highlight some of the 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that distinguish neonatal resuscitation from adult protocols. One thing is clear - it took 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

We extend our 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 to Dr. Boller and Dr. Burkitt for their leadership, and to all the contributors involved in the development process for bringing critical attention to this foundational advancement in newborn veterinary care.

We’re delighted to share another thoughtful contribution to our Suggested Readings series, this month from 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗢𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆𝗼, DVM, MS, DACVECC, faculty in ECC at the University of Florida.

In her post, Dr. Odunayo highlights an interesting case series titled “𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀.” This innovative study explores 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to manage severe azotemia in cats when conventional modalities such as intermittent hemodialysis are not available.

New Blog Post! – Meet the Author Series

This month, we're pleased to feature Dr. Corrin Boyd, BSc, BVMS(Hons), MVetClinStud, GradDipEd, PhD, MANZCVS, DACVECC - senior lecturer in ECC at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University.

Dr. Boyd shares insights from his PhD research on the renal effects of synthetic colloid fluids.

His recent clinical study follows earlier experimental work that unexpectedly showed evidence of harm from gelatin, but not starch. This follow-up aimed to determine whether hydroxyethyl starch poses similar risks in real-world settings.

New Blog Post – Meet the Author

This month, we’re excited to feature Dr. Joon Seo BVSc, MVetMed, DipACVIM (Cardiology), who shares his cardiologist’s perspective on the dynamic nature of systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Dr. Seo discusses findings from a retrospective study conducted across two centers, which revealed that SAM is a labile process, some cats with HCM spontaneously gained or lost SAM over time. These insights challenge previous assumptions and highlight the importance of longitudinal monitoring in feline cardiology.

We would like to thank Dr. Seo for sharing the story behind his recent research and shedding light on this evolving aspect of feline HCM.

This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Dr. Maxime Cambournac, Dr Vet, DipECVECC, head of the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit at CHV Frégis in Paris, France. Dr. Cambournac shares insights from his recent prospective study evaluating the caudal vena cava-to-aorta (CVC:Ao) ratio as a non-invasive marker for diagnosing and monitoring cardiac tamponade in dogs.
