The Davidson College H**petology Lab's work fits under two main categories--research and community outreach.

The DCHL's research focuses on the conservation, ecology and physiology of reptiles and amphibians. Our lab is also committed to community outreach and education and regularly delivers interactive presentations to schools in the Davidson area. Reptile Day is starting! Come out from 10 to 1 to see some awesome animals!

Photos from Davidson College H**petology Lab's post 04/07/2016

Reptile Day is just TWO DAYS AWAY!! Join us this Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm in the Blanche Knox Parker Garden!

Address for the event: 225 Concord Rd. Davidson, NC 28035

To accommodate for the expected chilly weather, some booths will be moved inside the lobby of the Dana science building! Plenty of booths (and animals) will still be in the Blanche Knox Parker Garden, and signs will point to the lobby of Dana!

Meet Cheerio, a crowd favorite! Cheerio is an eastern box turtle, the state reptile of North Carolina! His favorite foods include mice and cantaloupe. Box turtles are often found in residential areas as well as in fields and forests. If you ever find a box turtle, it's important to not take it home! However, if you find one crossing a road, you can move it in the direction that it's GOING! (not where it came from!)

Meet Ralph, our black rat snake in the H**p Lab! Ralph has lived with us in the lab for around 15 years. He loves eating mice and especially loves to climb! You may find him in one of the trees at Reptile Day, so keep your eyes peeled!

Petition started in battle over Capt. Sam’s Spit 01/10/2016

Hello everyone, despite all the efforts and SC Supreme court rulings, the developer there is still pushing to try to develop the last remaining natural area on Kiawah (Captain Sam’s Spit) and there is a petition to try and keep him from doing so. Here’s an article about it and the petition. I would greatly appreciate you signing the petition if you have 1 min of free time. It literally takes less than that.
Thanks very much

Need to brighten your day? Check out these diamondback terrapin hatchings from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center! Diamondback terrapins occupy unique ecological niche by living in the brackish water of tidal creeks. The DCHL travels to South Carolina twice annually to study the status of the terrapin population at Kiawah Island.

One of our herpetology students, Joe Zhou, caught a hellbender and is now releasing it back into the stream. Watch for some cool underwater shots of the hellbender retreating back under the rocks.

On July 2, the herpetology lab went on a hellbendering rampage! Hellbenders are a large type of salamander that are found in mountain streams in western North Carolina, northern Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and up the Appalachian mountain chain into Pennsylvania and New York. More info about these interesting salamanders can be found on our website: http://bio.davidson.edu/herpcons/herps_of_NC/salamanders/Cryall/Cry_all.html
